We are looking for an experienced VAT/US Sales Tax professional to join the Tax team on a six-month fixed-term contract. This is a project-focused role supporting key VAT/US Sales Tax transformation initiatives across EMEA and the US, with particular emphasis on the SAP S/4HANA implementation and strengthening VAT processes and controls across our EMEA entities.

You will bring strong technical VAT/US Sales Tax expertise together with practical experience of VAT/Sales Tax processes, ERP systems and tax controls. They will work closely with the EMEA and US Tax teams, Finance, IT and other stakeholders to ensure that VAT/Sales Tax requirements are appropriately designed, tested and implemented within SAP S/4HANA.

The role will also undertake a programme of VAT health checks across Illumina's EMEA entities, identifying compliance risks, process gaps and opportunities to simplify, standardise and improve the efficiency of VAT processes.

Key Responsibilities

SAP S/4HANA implementation and UAT

  • Support the EMEA and US Tax teams with VAT/US Sales Tax-related User Acceptance Testing (UAT) for the SAP S/4HANA implementation.
  • Develop, review and execute VAT/US Sales Tax test scenarios covering key transaction flows and VAT/US Sales Tax requirements.
  • Validate VAT/US Sales Tax determination, tax codes and VAT treatment across relevant purchase and sales transactions.
  • Identify, document and help resolve VAT/US Sales Tax-related system defects and configuration issues arising through UAT.
  • Work with Tax, Finance, IT and project stakeholders to ensure VAT/US Sales Tax requirements are correctly reflected within the new system.
  • Support testing of end-to-end VAT/US Sales Tax processes, including relevant VAT/Sales Tax reporting and compliance outputs.
  • Help ensure appropriate documentation and controls are in place ahead of implementation.

EMEA VAT health checks

  • Undertake structured VAT health checks across Illumina's EMEA entities.
  • Review key VAT processes, transaction flows, VAT determination and compliance controls.
  • Identify potential VAT risks, control weaknesses and areas requiring remediation.
  • Assess whether existing VAT processes can be simplified, standardised or automated.
  • Develop practical recommendations and work with the EMEA Tax team and relevant stakeholders to implement improvements.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the efficiency and consistency of VAT compliance processes across the region.
  • Document findings, actions and recommendations to provide a clear audit trail and support ongoing VAT governance.

Tax process improvement

  • Support the wider Tax team in developing more efficient and scalable VAT processes.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce manual intervention and improve the use of systems and data within VAT compliance and reporting.
  • Help standardise VAT processes and controls across EMEA where appropriate.
  • Provide technical VAT input into wider finance and tax transformation initiatives as required.

Experience and Skills

  • Significant practical experience in VAT/US Sales Tax, ideally gained within a multinational organisation, Big Four firm or other complex international environment.
  • Strong knowledge of EU, UK VAT and US Sales Tax principles and cross-border transactions.
  • Experience of reviewing VAT processes and controls and conducting VAT health checks or similar risk reviews.
  • Experience working with ERP systems, ideally SAP and preferably SAP S/4HANA.
  • Previous experience of system implementation, VAT/US Sales Tax configuration testing or UAT would be highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of VAT/US Sales Tax determination and typical order-to-cash and procure-to-pay transaction flows.
  • Ability to translate technical VAT/US Sales Tax requirements into practical system and process requirements.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple workstreams within a defined project timetable.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with Tax, Finance, IT and other business stakeholders across different jurisdictions.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work with internal systems and departments to ensure accurate documentation of tax positions
  • Assist with VAT and employment tax compliance as needed
