Solve the Problems Other Engineers Escalate

GEM Technologies is looking for an experienced Senior Systems & Infrastructure Engineer who enjoys solving difficult technical problems and taking ownership of them through resolution.

This is a hands-on senior infrastructure position, not a management role or traditional help desk position. You will be one of the technical resources our team and clients rely on for complex infrastructure issues, production incidents, escalations, migrations and projects across multiple client environments.

We are looking for an engineer who can step into a difficult situation, troubleshoot across technologies, determine the root cause, communicate clearly with the people involved, and remain accountable until the issue is resolved.

If you enjoy being the engineer brought in when standard troubleshooting has not solved the problem, this may be a good fit.

What You'll Do

You will work across multiple client environments with different technologies, configurations and business requirements. Your responsibilities will include:

• Own the investigation and resolution of complex infrastructure incidents and escalations.
• Administer and troubleshoot Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS and DHCP.
• Support Microsoft 365 and Entra ID environments, including identity, authentication, MFA and Conditional Access.
• Troubleshoot and support virtualization environments using VMware and/or Hyper-V.
• Diagnose networking issues involving firewalls, VPNs, VLANs, routing, switching and connectivity.
• Support backup, disaster recovery and business continuity systems.
• Plan and execute infrastructure migrations, upgrades and modernization projects.
• Perform root-cause analysis and implement or recommend changes that prevent recurring problems.
• Use PowerShell, scripting, automation and other tools where they can improve reliability and efficiency.
• Create and maintain clear technical documentation.
• Work directly with clients, vendors and other GEM engineers during projects and technical incidents.
• Provide occasional onsite support at client locations in the New York City metropolitan area.

What We're Looking For

We care more about demonstrated technical depth, troubleshooting ability and ownership than a perfect list of certifications or products on a resume.

Strong candidates will have substantial hands-on experience supporting production IT infrastructure and personally resolving complex technical problems.

You should have strong experience in most of these areas:

Microsoft Infrastructure

• Windows Server and Active Directory
• Group Policy, DNS and DHCP
• Microsoft 365 and Entra ID
• Identity, MFA and Conditional Access

Virtualization and Core Infrastructure

• VMware vSphere/ESXi and/or Microsoft Hyper-V
• Server and storage infrastructure
• Backup and disaster recovery

Networking and Security

• Firewalls, VPNs, VLANs, routing and switching
• Network and infrastructure troubleshooting
• System hardening, EDR, MFA and related security technologies

You should also be comfortable communicating directly with clients and explaining complex technical issues to both technical and nontechnical audiences.

Experience working for an MSP, technology consulting firm or other multi-client environment is strongly preferred. We will also consider engineers from complex internal IT environments who can demonstrate comparable technical breadth, independence and ownership.

Much of the work can be performed remotely. However, occasional onsite work at client locations in the New York City metropolitan area is an important part of the position. Candidates must be willing and able to provide onsite support when required.

Requirements

Experience That Will Set You Apart

We are particularly interested in candidates with meaningful hands-on experience in one or more of the following:

• Microsoft Exchange Server and hybrid Exchange environments
• Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (CVAD)
• Citrix NetScaler / ADC
• Advanced VMware infrastructure
• Advanced networking and firewall troubleshooting
• Veeam or similar backup and disaster recovery platforms
• PowerShell scripting and automation
• Infrastructure migrations and major upgrades

Candidates should bring strong, hands-on proficiency across most of these technologies, with deeper expertise in several areas. We do not expect identical experience with every product in GEM's environment, but this is a senior infrastructure role and requires broad technical capability, demonstrated troubleshooting depth, and the ability to work independently across multiple systems.

Benefits

The anticipated salary range for this position is $90,000-$120,000, depending on experience and demonstrated technical capabilities.
