How Will You Make an Impact?

Our new Bioprocess Design Center is an innovative facility dedicated to demonstrating and training customers on our innovative single-use technologies, Upstream and Downstream solutions, cell culture media, cell lines, resin and analytical offerings. We are seeking an experienced Senior Scientist – Downstream Process Development & Resin Design-In to lead chromatography process development, resin selection, and customer process-design activities.

This is a senior, customer-facing technical role combining deep downstream process expertise with commercial and strategic acumen. The successful candidate will lead the BDC’s Resin Design-In capability, partnering directly with biopharmaceutical customers to understand purification challenges, develop data-driven solutions, and translate experimental results into scalable process recommendations.

Working across customers, commercial teams, R&D, product management, and applications, this individual will serve as a trusted technical advisor and chromatography subject-matter expert, using scientific evidence to accelerate customer decision-making and adoption of Thermo Fisher downstream technologies.

What Will You Do?
Downstream Process Development & Technical Leadership

  • Lead resin selection, screening, benchmarking, and chromatography process-development programs across capture, intermediate, and polishing operations.
  • Independently design and execute studies evaluating resin performance, dynamic binding capacity, breakthrough behavior, residence time, loading, wash/elution conditions, impurity clearance, and process robustness.
  • Apply DoE and data-driven approaches to optimize processes and develop technically defensible resin recommendations.
  • Develop scale-down models and scale-up strategies supporting translation from laboratory development to manufacturing.
  • Serve as a downstream chromatography SME and mentor scientists and engineers in experimental design, troubleshooting, data interpretation, and scale-up.

Customer & Commercial Engagement

  • Serve as a senior technical advisor to customers evaluating chromatography and downstream processing solutions.
  • Lead technical discovery discussions and translate complex customer challenges into structured process-development programs.
  • Present experimental strategies, results, and recommendations to customer scientists, engineers, and technical leadership.
  • Partner with commercial and field teams on strategic opportunities, technical workshops, customer demonstrations, and pre-sales activities.
  • Translate technical performance into customer value related to productivity, scalability, robustness, operational efficiency, and risk reduction.

Resin Design-In Capability & Innovation

  • Own and advance the BDC’s Resin Design-In capability, including standardized workflows for resin screening, process optimization, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Develop reusable technical tools, decision frameworks, application data, and customer-facing technical packages.
  • Partner with R&D and product management to translate customer insights and experimental evidence into product, application, and workflow improvements.
  • Collaborate across upstream, filtration, analytical, automation, and process-modeling teams to develop integrated and next-generation bioprocess solutions.
  • Identify emerging customer needs and industry trends that can inform new BDC capabilities, services, and commercial opportunities.

How Will You Get Here?

  • B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or related discipline with 8+ years of relevant industry experience; M.S. with 6+ years; or Ph.D. with 3+ years, or equivalent experience.
  • Significant hands-on experience in downstream bioprocess development and chromatography process optimization for biologics.
  • Strong knowledge of chromatography fundamentals including resin selection, binding capacity, breakthrough behavior, residence time, column sizing, and process scale-up.
  • Experience with multiple chromatography modalities such as Protein A affinity, ion exchange, mixed-mode, or hydrophobic interaction chromatography.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently design experiments, analyze complex data, troubleshoot process performance, and translate results into actionable recommendations.
  • Strong technical communication and presentation skills with the ability to engage both scientific and business stakeholders.
  • Experience in a customer-facing technical, applications, consulting, or technical sales-support role strongly preferred.
  • Experience with DoE, process characterization, competitive resin benchmarking, and/or scale-down model development preferred.
