The Senior Manager, Application for Cytiva is responsible for leading the Application function within Genomic Medicine - providing deep scientific and technical leadership upstream and downstream applications, building and developing a high-performing application team, and driving design-in of Cytiva consumables and new applications that grow the portfolio.
This position is part of the Genomic Medicine located in Shanghai and will be onsite.
What you’ll do:
- Executive Partnership: Report directly to the General Manager of Genomic Medicine and serve as a member of the GenMed leadership team, shaping application strategy, portfolio growth, and cross-functional alignment.
- Team Leadership & Development: Build, lead, coach, and develop a high-performing Application team (application scientists and specialists); set clear objectives, foster a player-coach culture, and grow talent, capability, and succession within the function.
- Design-in of Consumables: Proactively work with customer R&D, process and application developers, and technical decision makers to specify Cytiva consumables into their process and workflow design at the earliest stage; translate customer needs into consumable requirements (material, surface, compatibility, sterility, interfaces, COGS) and influence the customer's design and bill of materials so Cytiva becomes the specified solution.
- New Application Development: Lead the development of new applications based on customer and market needs; scout, qualify, and incubate new application areas and adjacent markets for Cytiva's portfolio, and drive early adoption of new and advanced technologies.
- Voice of Customer & Product Input: Capture voice-of-customer and unmet needs from design-in engagements and feed them back to Product Management, R&D, and Marketing to shape the consumable and application roadmap.
- Technical Leadership & Support: Provide the highest level of scientific and technical product knowledge across Gene Therapy modalities (upstream/downstream, viral vector, nucleic acid processes); deliver pre- and post-sale technical support, product demonstrations, seminars, and training at customer sites and scientific meetings.
- Customer Engagement & Solutions: Build and strengthen deep technical relationships with customers; conduct demos and experiments with or in the customer lab, follow up on samples with technical advice, and identify opportunities where Cytiva products and services deliver cost savings and productivity gains.
- Cross-functional Partnership: Serve as the technical liaison between customers, Sales, Product Management, R&D, and Marketing; align application strategy with commercial and portfolio objectives and support account and territory plans.
- Portfolio & Market Enablement: Develop application-driven training courses and demonstrations, maintain market and competitive intelligence, and enable the commercial team with value positions, funnel support, and compelling technical value propositions.
- Governance & Compliance: Ensure all application, demo, and design-in activities adhere to Cytiva and Danaher compliance, quality, and regulatory standards, and uphold the highest standards of business conduct.
The essential requirements of the job include:
- Education: master’s degree in biotechnology, life sciences, or a related field; advanced degree (MS/PhD) in cell biology, biochemistry, immunology, or a related discipline strongly preferred.
- Experience: 8+ years of applications or field application experience in the biotechnology or life sciences industry, with deep Gene Therapy, viral vector, or nucleic acid process (upstream/downstream) expertise.
- People Leadership: Proven experience building, leading, and developing technical teams (application scientists/specialists), ideally as a player-coach, with at least 2+ years in a team leadership role.
- Design-in Capability: Demonstrated ability to influence customer process and workflow design at an early stage and to specify consumables or solutions into the customer's design and bill of materials; familiarity with design-specification practices (e.g., single-use user-requirements, ASTM/industry standards) is a plus.
- Application Innovation: Track record of developing new applications and identifying or qualifying new application areas that open new revenue or adoption.
- Technical Depth: Comprehensive scientific and technical knowledge of Gene Therapy modalities and the ability to engage customers' technical personnel, design experiments, and communicate technical value propositions.
- Cross-functional & Commercial Acumen: Strong ability to partner with Sales, Product Management, R&D, and Marketing; understanding of customers' key business drivers and funnel/opportunity management.
- Communication: Excellent ability to communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences, build relationships with technical decision makers, and present at customer sites and high-level scientific meetings.
- Mobility: Willingness and ability to travel as required (typically 30-50%+).
