Senior Legal and Compliance Officer – Italy (gn)

Reports to: Head of Legal and Compliance Europe

Role Purpose

Hiscox SA is a Luxembourg-based non-life insurance company expanding its presence in Italy through a newly opened Italian branch. We are looking for a Senior Legal and Compliance Officer to support the successful establishment and growth of our Italian operations.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced insurance lawyer or legal/compliance professional who wants to take a hands-on role in a new market entrant, working closely with local management, the European Legal and Compliance function, and the wider business. The role will provide broad exposure to legal, regulatory and compliance matters, with the opportunity to shape business decisions, build local processes, and support the development of a sustainable and compliant insurance business in Italy.

The Senior Legal and Compliance Officer will act as a trusted adviser to the Italian branch and will be responsible for providing day-to-day legal and compliance support, managing local regulatory matters, and ensuring that Hiscox SA’s Legal and Compliance framework is effectively implemented and adapted to the Italian market.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the implementation and local adaptation of the Hiscox SA Legal and Compliance framework for the Italian branch, including policies, procedures, controls and reporting processes.
• Provide practical legal and regulatory advice to the Italian business on a broad range of matters, including insurance regulation, distribution arrangements, product governance, contracts, marketing materials, complaints, disputes, outsourcing, corporate matters and branch governance.
• Support the establishment and ongoing development of the Italian branch, ensuring that legal and compliance considerations are embedded into business decisions, processes and strategic initiatives from the outset.
• Act as a key local point of contact for regulatory matters in Italy, including interactions with IVASS and other relevant authorities, preparation of regulatory responses, coordination with internal stakeholders and escalation to the Head of Legal and Compliance Europe where appropriate.
• Advise on Italian insurance regulatory requirements applicable to a non-life insurance branch, including conduct of business, distribution, product oversight and governance, customer documentation, complaints handling and regulatory reporting.
• Review and advise on commercial contracts, broker/intermediary arrangements, delegated authority arrangements and outsourcing arrangements, ensuring alignment with Italian legal and regulatory requirements and Hiscox SA standards.
• Support product development and product governance activities in Italy, including legal and compliance review of new products, distribution models and customer-facing documents.
• Perform compliance monitoring and testing activities for the Italian branch, identify control weaknesses, agree remediation actions with the business and track implementation.
• Support and oversee key compliance programmes locally, including sanctions, anti-bribery and corruption, conflicts of interest, financial crime, complaints management and conduct risk.
• Handle local incidents, breaches, complaints, disputes and litigation matters, including coordination with internal stakeholders and management of external counsel under central oversight.
• Deliver local legal and compliance training, awareness sessions and practical guidance to the Italian business.
• Contribute to regulatory horizon scanning for Italy, assess the impact of legal and regulatory developments on the business, and support the implementation of any required changes.
• Maintain and oversee key local logs and registers, including regulatory interaction logs, complaints and litigation registers, breach logs, regulatory watch actions and other compliance records.
• Work closely with the central Legal and Compliance team and other European branches to ensure consistency of approach, while appropriately reflecting Italian legal and regulatory requirements.

Key Skills and Experience

• Italian qualified lawyer or legal/compliance professional with strong knowledge of the Italian insurance regulatory environment.
• Typically 5–10 years of experience in insurance legal, regulatory or compliance roles, ideally gained in an insurance company, insurance intermediary, law firm, consultancy or regulator.
• Strong understanding of Italian non-life insurance regulation and market practices, including IVASS requirements, insurance distribution, product governance and conduct of business rules.
• Experience advising on commercial contracts, distribution arrangements, outsourcing, complaints, regulatory matters and business projects.
• Ability to provide pragmatic, business-focused advice while maintaining strong legal and compliance standards.
• Comfortable working in a hands-on role in a growing business environment, with the ability to build processes and influence decisions.
• Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work effectively with local management, central functions and external advisers.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Italian and English.
• Highly organised, proactive and able to manage multiple priorities with a high degree of autonomy.
