Job Description:

Parsons is looking for an amazingly talented Environmental Field Technician/Scientist to join our Winnipeg based team! In this role you will get to support environmental site assessment and remediation projects across Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, and Northwestern Ontario.

What You’ll Be Doing:

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys being in the field, coordinating contractors, mentoring junior staff, and taking ownership of high-quality Phase II ESA field programs and remediation programs. The successful candidate will play a key role in supervising drilling, test pitting, soil and groundwater sampling, soil vapour sampling, hydraulic conductivity testing, remedial excavations, and related contaminated sites work.

In this role, you will support and supervise environmental field programs, including:

• Supervising Phase II Environmental Site Assessment and/or Remedial Excavation field programs.

• Coordinating and overseeing drilling, monitoring well installation, test pitting, excavation activities, and soil sampling programs.

• Completing and/or supervising groundwater monitoring, well development, purging, low-flow sampling, groundwater sample collection, and soil vapour sample collection.

• Conducting field screening, soil logging, sample selection, and documentation of subsurface conditions.

• Completing hydraulic conductivity / permeability testing, such as slug testing or other in-situ K testing methods.

• Coordinating with subcontractors, drillers, excavators, laboratories, utility locators, and project managers.

• Maintaining accurate field notes, borehole/test pit logs, chain-of-custody forms, site photographs, and daily field reports.

• Supporting project health and safety planning and implementing safe work practices in the field.

• Supporting data review, figure preparation, reporting, and communication of field observations to project teams.

• Mentoring junior field staff and helping maintain consistent field methods and documentation standards.

• Work out of town and staying overnight, approximately 90% of the time and in town 10% of the time, subject to project workload. Weekend and evening work will be required.

• Willingness to travel and/or relocate to field sites is expected.

Depending on experience and project needs, the role may also include support for:

• Phase I ESA site reconnaissance / walkovers.

• Hazardous materials assessments, walkovers, and sampling.

• Supervision of remedial excavations and confirmatory soil sampling.

• Soil vapour, surface water, sediment, or other environmental sampling programs.

• Regulatory submissions and contaminated sites reporting.

What Required Skills You'll Bring:

The ideal candidate will bring a combination of practical field experience, sound technical judgment, and strong communication skills.

• Diploma, degree, or technical training in environmental science, geology, engineering, biology, environmental technology, or a related discipline.

• 1 or more years experience supervising or completing Phase II ESA field programs, including drilling, test pitting, soil sampling, and groundwater sampling.

• Strong understanding of field QA/QC procedures, sample handling, chain-of-custody requirements, and laboratory coordination.

• Ability to log soil, identify field evidence of contamination, and make sound sampling decisions in consultation with project managers.

• Experience working with drilling contractors, excavators, and environmental subcontractors.

• Strong field documentation skills and attention to detail.

• Ability to work independently in the field while keeping project teams informed.

• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites in Manitoba, Saskatchewan,  Northwest Territories, NW Ontario. 

• Commitment to safe work practices and working in accordance with site-specific health and safety plans.

• Willingness to work overtime, evenings and/or weekends, and work out of town for extended periods of time.

What Desired Skills You'll Bring:

• Eligibility for, or interest in obtaining, a professional or technical designation such as P.Geo., P.Eng., P.Biol., C.E.T., or equivalent.

• 2+ years experience supervising or completing Phase II ESA field programs, including drilling, test pitting, soil sampling, and groundwater sampling.

• Knowledge of CSA Phase I and Phase II ESA standards, CCME guidelines, and Manitoba/Saskatchewan/Northwest Territories/Ontario contaminated sites requirements.

• Experience with remedial excavation supervision and confirmatory sampling.

• Experience with hazardous materials assessments or designated substance surveys.

• Experience preparing borehole logs, test pit logs, groundwater monitoring records, and field summary tables.

• Experience using field instruments such as water level meters, interface probes, PID meters, Eagle 2 meters, multi-parameter water quality meters, and low-flow sampling equipment.

• Familiarity with petroleum hydrocarbon, metals, salinity, VOC, PAH, and other common contaminated sites parameters.
