Introducing the Trainline Data Science & Analytics Team 👋

Data Science & Analytics (DSA) sits at the heart of how Trainline understands and improves the end-to-end customer journey, from finding a journey through to booking. Our data scientists and analysts work closely together to support supply, search and commerce, spotting patterns that affect the customer experience, resolving incidents that get in the way of a smooth journey, and building solutions that make life easier for the wider team. This role offers the chance to work across multiple areas of the business rather than being confined to a single specialism, giving you real breadth and the opportunity to see how different parts of the customer journey connect.
As a Senior Data Scientist, you will take ownership of investigations and solutions that span search, supply and commerce, working with detailed datasets and linking data sources to support projects across pillars. You will collaborate closely with data scientists, data analysts and teams responsible for core customer experiences, while also mentoring junior colleagues and helping shape how the wider team approaches recurring problems. This is a role for someone who enjoys getting into the detail, thrives on variety, and wants to have a tangible impact on how customers experience Trainline.

In this role as the Senior Data Scientist, you will... 🚄

• Investigate incidents such as checkout errors, searches returning no results, and conversion declines, working through the detail to understand root causes.

• Identify recurring patterns across incidents and use these insights to build reusable solutions that reduce investigation time for the wider team.

• Work across search, supply and commerce, linking data sources and datasets to support projects that span more than one pillar.

• Spot product and commercial opportunities that arise from your analysis, and help bring these to the attention of the right teams.

• Mentor and guide junior colleagues, sharing your approach to problem-solving and helping build capability across the team.

• Partner closely with data scientists, data analysts and cross-functional teams responsible for search, supply, commerce and core customer experiences.

• Balance competing priorities across multiple areas of the business, bringing structure and clarity to fast-moving or ambiguous situations.

• Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, helping the team learn from incidents and turn them into lasting improvements.

We'd love to hear from you if you have... 🔎

• Substantial experience working as a data scientist at a senior level, with the confidence and judgement that comes from having operated in that capacity rather than stepping into it for the first time.

• Strong working knowledge of SQL and Python, used confidently to explore, analyse and draw insight from complex datasets.

• Experience working across more than one business area or pillar, comfortable adapting your approach depending on the context.

• A track record of owning a business or functional area, taking responsibility for outcomes rather than just delivering analysis.

• Confidence mentoring or guiding more junior colleagues, helping others grow their skills and approach to problem-solving.

• Comfort working at a detailed dataset level, connecting different data sources to build a fuller picture rather than relying on high-level summaries.

• Ideally, experience in a marketplace or similar technology-driven business, though this isn't essential.

• It would also be helpful if you have experience with product analytics, or have used AI tools alongside SQL and Python to work more efficiently.
