ROLE SUMMARY

School Counselor Interns support the execution of a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with the ASCA National Model, ensuring scholars receive data-driven, equitable, and developmentally appropriate support. They develop their professional practice while helping scholars become prepared for, admitted to, and successful through college. Interns implement activities to address scholars’ needs, consult and collaborate with school staff, and engage parents/guardians to support scholar success.

GAIN EXPERIENCE IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS (UNDER SUPERVISION OF CREDENTIALED SCHOOL COUNSELOR)

Provide Guidance to Support Middle/High School Completion 

• Help execute orientation activities for incoming 6th and 9th graders and scholars new to the school.

• Participate in orientation programs for parents/guardians and scholars.

• Learn about and provide resources/information to assist scholars in developing a rigorous academic course schedule, aligned with scholars’ skills and interests.

• Learn to evaluate scholars' graduation status and support counselors in informing scholars of their status.

• As necessary, support the development of 504 plans, participate in Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings, and contribute to the development of the Student’s Individual Transition Plan (ITP).

• Participate in and/or support Student Support and Progress Team (SSPT) meetings.
   

Provide Guidance to Support College Matriculation and Completion Aligned with Scholar's Personal Interests and Strengths

• Learn to create a college-going culture across the school, at all grade levels.

• Support career awareness activities across all grade levels.

• Support scholars in identifying a path towards post-secondary options, developing a list of colleges and universities to which to apply, applying to colleges, and matriculating to college.

• Assist in creating programs related to financial readiness for all grade levels.
   

Support the Personal Development of Scholars

• Learn to conduct structured, goal-oriented, data-driven guidance to meet the identified needs of individuals or groups of scholars.

• Support in the creation of Tier 1 and Tier 2 systems of support for scholars’ socioemotional development. 

• Refer scholars, as needed, to district and community resources in consultation with their parents/guardians.

• Consult and coordinate the referral process with other school and district personnel, including School Psychologists, School Social Workers, Administrators, Teachers, and other community resources.

• Consult and collaborate with School Counselors, School Social Workers, School Psychologists, Teachers, other school staff, and parents/guardians regarding the developmental needs of scholars.
   

Provide Systems Support 

• Learn about and use district technology (e.g., PowerSchool, Overgrad, CaliforniaColleges.edu) to inform and drive the counseling program.

• Build community resources to promote scholars’ academic, personal/social, and career success.

• Act as an advocate for scholars as appropriate in conjunction with other staff.

• Collaborate with parent engagement specialists to provide opportunities for parent education programs

• Foster the development and improvement of school counseling by reading professional journals, attending workshops and conferences, and continuing coursework.

• Culture: Demonstrate an ability to develop a positive, achievement-oriented, supportive, and collaborative culture of high expectations that motivates and inspires scholars to learn at college-preparatory levels.

• Data: Support the school counseling team with collecting, analyzing, and interpreting student data (academic, behavioral, attendance, and social-emotional indicators) to drive decision-making, design evidence-based interventions, and evaluate the effectiveness of counseling services.

• Expertise: Have strong and comprehensive school counseling expertise to drive scholars' academic and personal development. Thrive in an environment of high expectations and collaboration.

• Mindset: Hold a growth mindset and commit to continuously honing their craft. 

• Relationship-Building: Have strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills with both children and adults.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be currently enrolled in a Master’s level school counseling program to qualify.

• This position is intended for School Counseling graduate-level students to complete their fieldwork hours needed for completion of a School Counseling degree.

• Enrollment in a program leading to a Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Credential in School Counseling.
