Job Description Summary

The Wagner Lab at Miami University (https://wagneraqualab.weebly.com/) seeks a part-time Research Scholar. The goal of the position is to advance our understanding of vessel-sturgeon interactions in New York Harbor.

Job Description

Duties:

  • Assist with the execution of the Hudson River Foundation Harbor Vessel Interaction project.
  • Perform range testing to finalize acoustic array design, deploy acoustic array in New York Harbor, perform quarterly maintenance and data downloads, and array redeployment over a two-year period.
  • Complete sturgeon capture (sampling) and acoustic tagging and provide expertise in acoustic telemetry array design, deployment, troubleshooting, and data management, including the development and operation of receiver arrays in New York Harbor.
  • Help develop models describing Atlantic sturgeon biology, movement ecology, and habitat use.
  • Serve as the primary bridge between the project's field data collection and statistical analyses, providing the biological and methodological expertise needed to determine how movement and vessel-interaction models should be parameterized and interpreted by incorporating the species' complex life history and behavior as well as the political, regulatory, and legal constraints governing Atlantic sturgeon research.
  • Oversee field efforts and train personnel in capture, tagging, and telemetry methods.
  • Coordinate with collaborators, provide scholarly and methodological input, oversee data collection and analysis, and contribute substantially to grant deliverables, reports, presentations, and publications.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required:

  • Ph.D. in ecology, fisheries, or a related discipline.
  • At least 5 years of experience in acoustic telemetry, Atlantic sturgeon biology, quantitative movement ecology, and large-scale telemetry program coordination.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Possess specialized expertise that is essential to the successful execution of the Hudson River Foundation Harbor Vessel Interaction project.
  • Hold Endangered Species Act (ESA) authorization to sample Atlantic sturgeon, given the highly restricted and regionally allocated take available for this endangered species.
  • Experience in sturgeon capture (sampling) and acoustic tagging and expertise in acoustic telemetry array design, deployment, troubleshooting, and data management, including the development and operation of receiver arrays in complex environments such as New York Harbor and the Hudson River.
  • Have established professional relationships with researchers, agencies, and institutions participating in coastwide Atlantic sturgeon telemetry efforts.
