Summary
The Reproductive Health Assistant (“Medical Assistant”) provides direct clinical support for family planning, medication abortion, and procedural abortion services. Working with clinicians and nursing staff, this position prepares patients, assists with visits and procedures, and promotes safe, timely, patient-centered care. Occasional front desk coverage may be assigned.
Essential Functions
Performance is evaluated through clinical competency, patient safety, documentation accuracy, patient experience, and teamwork.
1. Patient Preparation and Clinical Support. Room patients; obtain and document vital signs, histories, medication information, and allergies; prepare examination rooms; and assist clinicians with examinations and authorized procedures.
2. Reproductive Healthcare Support. Assist with family planning, medication abortion, and procedural abortion visits, including patient preparation, equipment readiness, approved patient instructions, and ultrasound preparation and support as trained and authorized.
3. Specimen Collection and Testing. Perform venipuncture, specimen collection and handling, and authorized point-of-care testing in accordance with competency validation, clinical protocols, and applicable requirements.
4. Patient Flow and Team Coordination. Prepare rooms and supplies between visits, communicate patient readiness and delays, and support efficient clinic flow. Provide registration or scheduling coverage when needed.
5. Safety, Documentation, and Quality. Document care accurately in the Electronic Health Record (EHR); follow infection prevention, privacy, laboratory, and safety requirements; maintain clinical equipment and supplies; and report concerns promptly.
6. Patient Experience and Collaboration. Deliver respectful, inclusive, confidential care; communicate clearly with patients and colleagues; and perform delegated duties within documented training, competency, and authorization.
Other Responsibilities
Complete required PPIL onboarding and initial competency validation within established timelines; maintain competencies through ongoing training and reassessment. Perform other duties as assigned within the role’s authorized scope.
Qualifications
Education (Strongly Preferred): Graduation from a medical assisting program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). Professional certification (CMA/RMA) is not required.
Experience (Required): At least one year of experience using an electronic health record; Epic experience is strongly preferred.
Experience (Preferred): One or more years of experience as a Medical Assistant in a high-volume ambulatory care setting; reproductive healthcare and Electronic Health Records experience preferred.
Skills: Clinical organization, accurate documentation, patient-centered communication, infection prevention, and effective teamwork.
Physical Demands
Frequent standing, walking, reaching, and computer use; occasional assistance with patient movement and lifting up to 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be provided.
