Summary:
The Union-Tribune Community Press has an opening for a full-time reporter covering La Jolla and Rancho Bernardo/4S Ranch.
We are looking for a journalist who will immerse themselves in coverage of community news, including government-related bodies, schools, sports, businesses, local personalities, entertainment, real estate, health, and science.
What you will do:
Create impactful stories and news reports for prominent display in print and on digital platforms
Provide weekly meeting coverage in La Jolla and Rancho Bernardo/4S Ranch (often late afternoon or early evening meetings)
Build a network of sources
Be versatile, as stories will cover a variety of topics
Write on deadline in a fast-paced environment; speed and accuracy are critical. Although the UTCP publications are weekly in print, they publish daily online. Candidates must have the ability to produce daily copy as necessary
Pitch story ideas on a regular basis
Take publishable photographs (good cellphone photos are fine)
Maintain communication with a supervising editor
Understand and use company-provided hardware, software, and cloud-based equipment and systems for company business and tasks
Contribute to a positive culture of teamwork and collaboration
What you will bring:
Academic degree or equivalent experience in journalism
Command of various journalistic writing forms with solid news judgment and fluency in AP style
Ability to work cooperatively and adaptively in a team setting
Proven history juggling tasks in a deadline-driven environment
Commitment to the fundamentals of journalism: fairness, accuracy, accessibility
Strong interpersonal, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills and an ability to work with people at all levels of the organization
The skill to mine human sources, documents, and data
Benefits and Compensation:
The hourly range is $19.23 - $21.63 + cell phone stipend. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, the Company offers eligible employees a variety of benefits including medical, dental, life and disability insurance, 401k, as well as paid time off and select paid holidays (all benefits are based on eligibility). Conditions of Employment:

Travel – This position entails occasional driving for work assignments, in-person training sessions and/or meetings. The employee will be responsible for transporting themselves between different sites as needed
Must be available for shift work. May be required to work various hours for coverage outside of normal business hours
