About Us

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Description of Work

The NC Department of Adult Correction continuously recruits for Psychologist positions and will accept applications regardless of whether there is a current vacancy. Your application for this posting will remain on file for 365 days and will be screened for vacancies as they occur.

Adult Correction Comprehensive Health Services strives to provide North Carolina offenders access to quality, cost effective healthcare that is rendered by dedicated mental health professionals.

Psychologists provide direct psychological services to offenders including those with severe and persistent mental illnesses and personality disorders. Such services include psychological assessments, crisis intervention, individual and group psychotherapy and consultations with medical, custody and classification staff about behavioral management strategies for problem offenders. Psychologists may also conduct risk assessments on offenders with a history of violent or sexual crimes. Other responsibilities may include conducting staff training on relevant mental health topics such as management of the mentally ill and developmentally disabled and management of suicide precautions.


Work Schedule: Staff Psychologists may have night/weekend on-call responsibilities.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Pay Range: $66,696 - $110,049

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement.

  • Documented knowledge in the techniques, principles, and/or instruments used in developmental psychological, psychotherapy, counseling, behavioral, and educational assessments.

  • Documented knowledge of interpreting diagnostic findings and preparing comprehensive reports.

About The Division of Comprehensive Health Services:

Comprehensive Health Services (CHS) delivers health services to individuals incarcerated in North Carolina state prisons. Our mission is to provide constitutionally appropriate medical, mental health, dental, and pharmaceutical care that meets professional standards. CHS health professionals ensure access to timely, essential, and comprehensive services and programs that support the wellbeing of incarcerated individuals. This care is delivered by licensed staff and through partnerships with private providers and the University of North Carolina system.

Education Equivalency Verification

Veterans’ and National Guard Preference
