Position Summary:

The Production Scientist III, Organic Synthesis Chemist is a senior level laboratory position focused on leading the effective and efficient production within an ISO-regulated/lean manufacturing environment.  The associate requires a solid understanding and extensive hands-on experience in all areas of production and chemistries.  The Production Scientist III, Organic Synthesis Chemist will perform chemical syntheses independently and be responsible for training less experienced chemists. To be successful, the Production Scientist III, Organic Synthesis Chemist must consistently demonstrate the 4I values of Integrity, Involvement, Innovation, and Intensity.

Key Responsibilities: 

·         Accurately performs manufacturing production tasks while adhering to all relevant work instructions (manufacturing records, standard work instructions, SOPs, etc.).

·         Maintains detailed documentation to support  ISO and Class A production requirements while maintaining a safe working environment at all times.

·         Independently performs small and medium scale organic synthesis production with capability to train others. Responsible for production of small molecule crosslinkers, biotinylation reagents, resins and other compounds ranging from mg to Kg scales.

·         Utilizes a range of equipment with high degree of expertise, to support chemical production such as analytical balances, round bottom flasks (up to 72L), glass reactors (up to 100L), column chromatography columns, vacuum drying ovens, rotary evaporators, etc.

·         Flexes to support large scale production operations as required.

·         Performs independent analysis of compounds and reaction mixtures using common chemical analytical methods such as NMR, TLC, FTIR, UV/Vis and HPLC. Demonstrated ability to utilize analytical methods for process troubleshooting.

·         Establishes balanced a production schedule in focus area to ensure weekly team production targets are met.

·         Performs daily cleaning and organization of the lab including sweeping, mopping and waste disposal. Holds less senior personnel accountable for maintaining laboratory organization and cleanliness.

·         Maintains daily department metrics as assigned.

·         Analyzes internal and external customer feedback and product complaint inquiries ensuring investigations are completed in a thorough manner and completed on-time.

·         Adheres to all safety protocols. Identifies and drives safety improvement initiatives.

·         Leads RCCM investigations and assists other associates where necessary ensuring on-time completion and corrective actions established for appropriate mitigation.

·         Interacts with large volume and custom sales to evaluate feasibility of potential bulk inquiries supporting protocol updates and feasibility work as required.

·         Drives Practical Process Improvement initiatives through project initiation, participation, and a continuous improvement mindset.

·         Sustain assigned area(s) to support 5S initiatives supporting the 5S champion in ensuring that weekly audits and other tasks are complete.

·         Train and mentor associates working with manager to prioritize and ensure cross-training objectives are met.

·         Serves as a Manufacturing representative on multiple concurrent New Product Introduction (NPI) teams.

·         Supports cost justification for the new equipment purchases.

·         Supports laboratory efforts required for both process and equipment validation.

·         Completes and schedules metrology work orders as assigned to maintain an audit ready production environment.

·         Complete other projects or duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

·         Bachelor of Science degree in Organic Chemistry, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, or other Life Science emphasis.  A Masters/PhD degree in Organic Chemistry with previous organic compound synthesis preferred.

·         6-10+ years Bachelor-level scientist, or 3-5+ years graduate-level scientist, with demonstrated proficiency in chemical production techniques outlined in the training matrix with the ability to work independently.

·         Models safe lab practices and GLP concepts.

·         A thorough understanding of organic chemistry with ability to train others.

·         Interest in learning statistical-tools and techniques to evaluate, troubleshoot and improve production and quality (Control charting, Pareto analysis, manufacturing capability and guard banding, DOE, MSA, etc.).

·         Exposure to process validation and equipment validation preferred.

·         Ability to present experimental designs and scientific findings to peers, external department stakeholders, and managers.

·         Ability to multi-task, assign, and delegate tasks ensuring completion  in a fast-paced laboratory production environment.

·         Intensely safety-focused with willingness, to instruct and coach others in regard to handling hazardous chemicals.

·         Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Word and Excel with relevant ERP experience. Proficiency with ChemDraw. Exposure to statistical analysis and DOE software preferred.

·         Demonstrated clear and effective communication skills for intra-department and inter-department communication.

·         Ability to lead projects with a high degree of complexity and scope.

·         Demonstrated ability to draft NPI documents including MBRs, BOM, Hazard Assessments, incoming specs, etc.

·         Associates in this position may as part of their job activities generate or manage hazardous waste as defined by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.  Individuals in this position are required to receive initial hazardous waste training within the first 30 working days of assignment.  The initial waste training shall include but not be limited to the following general categories: 

• • Identifying hazardous and solid waste, hazardous waste management, recycling, treatment and disposal, emergency preparedness, record keeping, pollution prevention and waste reduction. 
  • Following initial training the Associate in this position will receive annual refresher training in the same topic field as listed above.

This position has not been approved for Relocation Assistance.
