Reporting to the General Manager, the Operations Manager leads western operations and facility management for Island EMS and provides support to the Provincial MFR Program. Reporting to the General Manager, the role supports effective service delivery, staff development, and alignment with organizational policies and priorities.

Key accountabilities include staff and service improvement, facility maintenance, Medical First Responder programs, occupational health and safety, and operational policy development. The manager also promotes a culture of patient and workplace safety across IEMS.

The position entails, but is not limited to the following:

  • Ongoing management and oversight of western operations and staff (Alberton, O’Leary and Summerside bases);

  • Ongoing facility management and oversight of all IEMS facilities which includes working with employees, Duty SOPs, management and fleet staff to identify and address any issues;

  • Manage employee and labour issues with utmost confidentiality, empathy, and respect;

  • Prepare and distribute operational or facility updates and memos to all staff;

  • Demonstrate superior conflict resolutions skills by balancing assertiveness, sensitivity and successfully mediating conflicts will be a key skill you will possess;

  • Responsible for the safety and well-being of staff and the public ensuring that all regulations, guidelines, and legislation are followed;

  • Provide support and oversight to the Provincial MFR Coordinator;

  • Responsible for conducting investigations into any complaints or inquiries brought forward;

  • Involved in the decision making of recruitment processes and candidate selection as well as other Human Resources recruitment functions;

  • Working with the communications team for public information releases, serving as a representative of Island EMS at community, stakeholder or municipal meetings when required;

  • Provides clinical support as well as coaching by attending scenes when required;

  • This position may require working on the ambulance in emergencies to retain professional skills as a paramedic;

  • Ensure overall responsibility and accountability of all aspects of the deployment and utilization of Paramedic resources, operational policies, and resources to maintain the efficiency and effectiveness of the service provided;

  • Provide on scene coordination for major incidents, coordinate contingency and disaster management process;

  • Provide coverage and support for the General Manager as required;

  • Travel within the region is required; and

  • Other duties as assigned.

As the ideal candidate for this role, you possess the following:

  • Currently registered in good standing, or eligible for registration, as a Paramedic (PCP, ICP or ACP) in the province of Prince Edward Island;

  • Possess a minimum of five years’ experience working as a paramedic which could include experience in a progressively responsible leadership role;

  • Ideally would have proven experience in EMS leadership, information technology, finance, and human resources;

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities with a proven track record for inspiring and motivating others;

  • Are committed to providing stellar levels of customer/patient service;

  • Use a positive and creative approach to problem solving;

  • Possess outstanding communication, negotiating, and dispute resolution skills;

  • Have working knowledge of standard business computer programs (i.e. Microsoft Office Suite);

  • Possess a valid Class 4 driver’s license in good standing in Prince Edward Island (or equivalent);

  • Incident Command Systems and basic Emergency Management training are assets;

  • Additional disaster management training essential (or willingness to complete) is an asset; and

  • A post-secondary education in Health, Paramedicine, Business Administration, or related field is an asset;

Knowledge or Skills Required:

  • Thorough working knowledge of paramedic scope of practice;

  • Should have thorough knowledge of and assist in the development of the System Status Plan;

  • Skilled in leading and developing staff;

  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team;

  • Ability to exercise independent judgement and strategize in a dynamic work environment while using positive and creative approaches to problem-solving;

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in dealing with people and working in teams;

  • Outstanding communication, delegating, negotiating, and conflict resolution skills;

  • Effective oral and written communications;

  • Strong working knowledge and familiarity with Microsoft Office host of programs and typing;

  • Emotional stability, good dexterity, good general health and physical coordination;

  • Strong analytical, problem solving and organizational abilities;

Regular business hours required, but some irregular hours can be expected. 

Compensation:

Salary Range for this position is $95,000- $105,000 annually.

The Base Pay range may vary depending on the successful candidate or other relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience and education/training. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Medavie employees may participate in various performance-based incentive programs. Payments under these programs are discretionary and subject to both individual and organizational results.
