Cincinnati Children's Perinatal Institute Open Positions

The Division of Neonatology within the Perinatal Institute at Cincinnati Children's is currently seeking full-time Faculty and Staff Physician candidates to provide in-patient clinical attending physician service at nursery locations supported by the Perinatal Institute in the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky/Dayton areas, including

• The Cincinnati Children’s Level IV NICU
• Five (5) Level III NICUs
• Six (6) Level II NICUs, and
• Eleven (11) Newborn Nurseries 
• Six (6) Outpatient NICU Follow-Up Clinic locations

The Division provides care for more than 29,000 patients / > 154,000 patient encounters annually.  The team includes:

• > 60 Faculty and Staff Neonatologists
• > 10 Level II Special Care Hospitalists
• > 15 Newborn Hospitalists
• > 115 Advanced Practice Providers
• A 3-year Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship Program with 20 Fellows

The Perinatal Institute provides an exciting, innovative, collegial, and collaborative environment dedicated to favorably changing outcomes for newborns and their health.  Our team of clinicians and researchers consists of scientists, neonatologists, immunologists, pulmonologists, biologists, neurologists, radiologists, informatics experts and data analysts. Together, we study a broad range of topics—from organ development to early prediction of neurodevelopmental disabilities in preterm infants to how environmental stimuli impact metabolism, growth and development in the NICU and beyond to neonatal health inequities and ways of increasing access to care.  Our diverse backgrounds and skill sets give us a comprehensive understanding of varied topics with a singular focus: to improve care for all newborns.

As national leaders in neonatal care, researchers in the Division of Neonatology at Cincinnati Children’s have been pioneering advancements in care for newborns for decades.  By coordinating efforts and fostering these multidisciplinary collaborations, we continue to advance our knowledge and develop groundbreaking therapies to help infants thrive.

Clinical exposure is rich and stimulating, ensuring development of strong bedside clinical acumen.  Our positions include opportunities for mentorship and teaching of medical students, residents and training fellows, nursing, and allied health care professionals as well as participation in NICU- and newborn-focused quality improvement and research projects. Work Schedules will include day and night shifts in addition to weekend and holiday rotations.

Academic Neonatology Assistant/Associate Professor

Clinical effort will include in-patient clinical attending physician service at one or more of Children’s NICU, (5) Level III and (6) Level II NICUs.  Current faculty enjoy diverse careers in medical education, quality improvement, epidemiology, global health, translational and basic sciences with deep infrastructure support and structured mentoring for the pursuit of academic excellence.  High-priority areas are Quality Improvement, Renal, and NICU Follow-Up Clinic.

Requirements:

Applicants must be board eligible or certified in Neonatology. Assistant or Associate Professor appointment or eligibility required.

Staff Physician Neonatologist

Staff Neonatologists will be responsible for in-patient clinical attending physician service at one or more of Children’s NICU, (5) Level III and (6) Level II NICUs.  High-priority areas are Quality Improvement, Renal, and NICU Follow-Up Clinic.

Applicants must be board eligible or certified in Neonatology.

Level II Special Care Nursery Hospitalist

The hospitalist will be responsible for in-patient clinical attending physician service at Level I Well Newborn and Level II Special Care Nurseries at nursery locations supported by the Perinatal Institute.  This includes daily rounds at Level I Well Newborn and Level II Special Care Nurseries, as well as delivery attendance at high-risk deliveries, stabilizations, transitional care and well-newborn exams and discharges, and clinical consultation when requested by community physicians.  

Requirements:

Must have newborn training. Additional training is available for Level II Special Care Nursery clinical coverage.

Applicants must be board eligible or certified in Pediatrics.

Level II Special Care Nursery Fellowship Training Program

The Perinatal Institute at Cincinnati Children's is currently seeking Pediatricians to join our Level II Special Care Nursery Fellowship Training Program to focus on learning the skills necessary to independently practice in a Level II Special Care Nursery.   Many pediatricians complete their pediatric residency program with as little as two months of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) experience. With limited NICU experience during their pediatric residency, many graduates are not prepared to independently practice in a Level II Special Care Nursery upon graduation and often require further training.

We recognized this training gap and in response created our 9-18 month Level II Special Care Nursery Fellowship Program. This non-ACGME accredited fellowship program is administered through the GME office at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

The goal of the program is to ensure that all fellows graduate with the education, skills, and experience needed to independently practice in a Level II Special Care Nursery. This includes both the management of a wide breadth of neonatal diseases and physiology present in moderately preterm and term infants after birth as well as the initial resuscitation and stabilization of an extremely preterm or critically ill infant prior to transport to a higher level of care. On a monthly basis, trainees spend one week in each of the following clinical areas: Level I Nursery rotations, Level II Special Care Nursery rotations, Level III NICU rotations, and supplemental learning.

Trainees are hired and compensated as Staff Physicians – Level 1 Newborn Physician. Upon successful completion of this program, trainees transition to the Staff Physician – Level 2 Special Care Nursery Physician role and compensation structure.

Newborn Hospitalist

The hospitalist will be responsible for in-patient clinical attending physician service at Level I nurseries, well-newborn exams and discharges at nursery locations supported by the Perinatal Institute.  This includes daily rounds in Level I nurseries, physician care for normal newborns assigned to the Perinatal Institute, and clinical consultation when requested by community physicians.

NICU Hospitalist

The hospitalist provides direct care to neonatal patients admitted to our state-of-the-art Level IV NICU. They work in conjunction with the attending neonatologist physician providing the patient’s day-to-day care and management of complex and acutely ill patients. Hospitalist physicians work in the context of a multidisciplinary team, in collaboration with a large group of Neonatal Advanced Practice Providers. 

This position is an exciting opportunity for pediatricians to practice in the NICU setting while continuing to learn and expand their clinical skills. The position is perfect for a graduating resident who has a gap year before entering the match for a Neonatology Fellowship and would like to work in the NICU setting first, or the graduating resident who is not looking to enter a Fellowship but would like to work in the NICU environment.

Work Schedules will include day and night shifts in addition to weekend and holiday rotations. Hospitalists work on average 3 (12 hour) shifts per week, which provides for excellent work/life balance.  You will have additional opportunities to participate in educational and quality improvement projects within the NICU.

Applicants must be board eligible or certified in Pediatrics. Must have newborn training/experience in Level III/IV NICU. Orientation is provided.

Alternative Schedule / Weekend / Nocturnist Hospitalist

The Perinatal Institute at Cincinnati Children's is currently seeking a full-time, Inhouse, Staff Physician Neonatologist and/or Level II Special Care Nursery Hospitalist to focus on neonatal programs in the Greater Cincinnati/ Northern Kentucky/Dayton areas.  This position offers flexible, alternative work schedules focused on night and weekend shifts with time off during the weekday which is rewarded with a competitive compensation package. Clinical exposure is rich and stimulating, ensuring development of strong bedside clinical acumen.  Clinical effort will include service at one or more of Children’s Level IV NICU, (5) Level III and (6) Level II NICUs as well as delivery attendance, stabilization care and well-newborn exams and discharges.
