About the team and role

Our NuData team at eBay brings together exceptional engineers who are pushing the boundaries of distributed systems to build the next generation of database platforms powering eBay’s global marketplace. NuData builds and operates petabyte-scale, highly available distributed data platforms supporting some of eBay’s most critical workloads.

We are seeking an experienced Member of Technical Staff 2 (MTS 2) to join the NuData team in Bengaluru. You will work closely with NuData engineers, technical leads, and architects in Bengaluru, the U.S., China, and Ireland to design, build, and operate highly scalable distributed database systems.

In this role, you will take ownership of significant components and capabilities within NuData’s distributed database platforms. You will solve challenging engineering problems involving scalability, availability, performance, consistency, and operational efficiency and contribute to the design and evolution of systems operating at eBay scale.

This is a highly hands-on engineering role. You will design and implement production software, write and review code, develop prototypes, benchmark solutions, debug complex system and production issues, and work with other engineers to deliver reliable distributed systems. You will participate in architectural and design discussions and help turn technical requirements into robust production solutions.

You will also work directly with NuData customers when needed to understand workloads, troubleshoot technical issues, and help ensure our platforms meet their performance, reliability, and scalability requirements.

What you will accomplish

• Design, develop, test, and operate critical components and capabilities within NuData’s large-scale distributed database platforms.

• Take end-to-end ownership of significant features and components—from requirements and technical design through implementation, testing, deployment, monitoring, and production support.

• Write high-quality, production-grade code and actively participate in design and code reviews.

• Solve complex engineering problems across areas such as storage, transactions, replication, distributed consensus, partitioning, geo-distribution, and high-concurrency systems.

• Contribute to technical designs and architectural decisions by evaluating alternatives, identifying tradeoffs, and working with senior engineers and architects to select effective solutions.

• Improve the scalability, latency, availability, reliability, and infrastructure efficiency of systems operating at eBay scale.

• Diagnose and resolve complex production issues across software, storage, networking, and distributed-system boundaries and implement solutions that prevent recurrence.

• Build prototypes and conduct performance benchmarks to evaluate new designs, algorithms, and technologies before bringing them into production.

• Partner with engineers, technical leads, product managers, and NuData customers to understand requirements and translate them into robust technical solutions.

• Contribute to strong engineering practices around design, code quality, testing, observability, automation, deployment, and operational readiness.

• Share technical knowledge and provide guidance to other engineers through design discussions, code reviews, documentation, and collaborative problem solving.

• Evaluate emerging technologies and open-source solutions and apply them where they can improve NuData’s architecture, performance, or engineering efficiency.

• Effectively use AI-assisted engineering tools to improve development velocity while maintaining high standards for correctness, reliability, security, and maintainability.

What you will bring

• Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field with 6+ years of experience, or a Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of experience building large-scale software systems.

• Strong hands-on experience designing, developing, and operating distributed systems, databases, storage systems, or large-scale data infrastructure.

Core Technical Expertise

• Strong understanding of distributed-systems concepts, including replication, consistency, partitioning, fault tolerance, high availability, and distributed consensus.

• Strong understanding of database and storage-system fundamentals, including areas such as storage management, write-ahead logging (WAL), transactions, concurrency control, indexing, caching, and query processing.

• Understanding of transaction-management concepts, including isolation levels, concurrency control, locking, crash recovery, replication, and failover.

• Understanding of distributed-system failure modes, including network partitions, partial failures, and consensus protocols such as RAFT/PAXOS.

• Strong computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, concurrency, networking, operating systems, and software design.

• Strong programming skills in one or more languages such as C++, Java, Python, Scala, or equivalent languages, with experience developing and debugging production software.

• Experience with Object-Oriented Design, distributed programming, and relational and/or NoSQL database systems.

• Experience with modern infrastructure technologies and cloud-native environments, including technologies such as Kubernetes and Docker.

• Ability to analyze and diagnose complex performance and production issues across multiple layers of a distributed system.

Engineering Ownership & Collaboration

• Demonstrated ability to independently own significant software components and features from design through production.

• Ability to break down complex technical problems, evaluate alternatives, and develop high-quality engineering solutions.

• Ability to contribute effectively to architecture and design discussions and clearly explain technical decisions and tradeoffs.

• Strong engineering discipline around code quality, testing, observability, automation, reliability, and operational readiness.

• Ability to write clear technical designs and documentation for significant features and components.

• Strong communication and collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively with engineers, technical leads, product teams, and customers.

• Demonstrated proficiency building production-grade software with AI coding agents, improving engineering velocity while maintaining high standards for quality, availability, and maintainability.

• Ability to decompose problems and provide agents with the right context, specifications, constraints, and validation criteria.

• Ability to capture and express business, architecture, codebase, and operational knowledge so AI coding agents can execute complex tasks accurately and autonomously.

• Hands-on experience delivering complex, production-quality software using AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex, etc.

Global Collaboration

• Ability to work effectively in a globally distributed engineering organization and collaborate with teams in Bengaluru, the U.S., China, and Ireland.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively using both synchronous and asynchronous collaboration.
