Summary:

The Latin American Medical Coordinator leads the daily medical operation at the New York Mets Dominican Republic Academy and coordinates care for organizational players throughout Latin America. Reporting to the Minor League Medical Coordinator, this role combines direct clinical care, staff leadership, and medical operations to support player health, availability, and development. The coordinator owns routine clinical and operational decisions within agreed standards, maintains a daily presence with players and staff, and aligns complex cases with team physicians and MiLB and MLB medical leadership. Responsibilities include developing local healthcare relationships, ensuring continuity of care during player transitions, and building a trusted medical environment that reflects the Mets Performance Department’s standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Dominican Republic Medical Leadership

• Own daily medical operations at the academy, including treatment schedules, staff assignments, practice and game coverage, and follow-up during camps, the Dominican Summer League season, and the off-season
• Provide hands-on evaluation, treatment, injury prevention, and rehabilitation within professional scope, while maintaining visible daily involvement with players and staff
• Resolve routine clinical and operational issues independently within organizational guidelines; document decisions, follow through on action items, and seek support when complexity or risk requires it
• Implement the medical standards established by the Minor League Medical Coordinator, adapting workflows to local resources while maintaining consistent quality and timely access to care

Rehabilitation and Return to Play

• Lead local case management for injured players and serve as the primary medical contact for high-priority cases in the Dominican Republic
• Coordinate complex, long-term, and post-surgical cases with team physicians, the MiLB Rehabilitation Coordinator, and MLB medical and reconditioning staff as appropriate
• Apply individualized rehabilitation plans with objective testing, loading progressions, and baseball-specific milestones consistent with organizational return-to-play criteria and physician guidance
• Integrate rehabilitation with strength and conditioning, sport science, and coaching plans so athletes build physical capacity and skill readiness throughout recovery
• Communicate readiness, restrictions, and unresolved concerns before changes in participation; coordinate medical clearance through designated physicians and organizational protocols

Staff Development and Medical Culture

• Lead Dominican Republic medical staff through clear responsibilities, regular feedback, case reviews, and individual development plans; support hiring and evaluations with the Minor League Medical Coordinator
• Delegate decisions within each clinician’s competence and support staff in developing independent judgment while remaining accountable for the quality of care
• Maintain a respectful training room where players report concerns early and staff can ask questions, discuss errors, and seek assistance without fear
• Model calm leadership, cultural awareness, professional boundaries, and sustainable work habits; provide structured education and supervision for assigned interns

Communication and Organizational Alignment

• Collaborate daily with strength and conditioning, nutrition, sport science, mental skills, coaching, and academy leadership to coordinate player care and development plan
• Provide clear player-status updates to authorized medical, Player Development, and front office personnel, including restrictions, next steps, and expected reassessment dates
• Notify the Minor League Medical Coordinator promptly, within the same day, about injuries, hospitalizations, serious imaging findings, significant MLB or top-prospect issues, and sensitive cases. Activate emergency care immediately when needed
• Maintain a weekly check-in with the Minor League Medical Coordinator to review priority cases, staff and resource needs, and decisions requiring shared input; bring relevant context and a recommended course of action
• Explain care plans in the player’s preferred language, check understanding, and coordinate approved communication with families, guardians, and representatives when appropriate

Local Medical Network and Emergency Readiness

• Maintain and expand relationships with qualified physicians, hospitals, surgeons, diagnostic centers, and other healthcare providers in the Dominican Republic and other international locations; help identify resources elsewhere in Latin America as needed
• Arrange consultations, imaging, specialist care, and surgical logistics in coordination with team physicians and medical leadership, ensuring results and follow-up plans reach the treating staff
• Maintain and rehearse emergency action plans with academy leadership and local responders, including communication, transport, equipment readiness, and access to receiving facilities
• Coordinate physician-directed preventive health services and responses to illness or environmental health concerns, and connect players with appropriate nutrition, mental health, or other specialist support

International Player Care and Transitions

• Coordinate entrance physicals, baseline assessments, and medical onboarding for academy players and new international signees with physicians, International Scouting, and academy operations
• Support authorized medical evaluations of prospective signees by organizing histories, examinations, and follow-up findings for review by team physicians and medical leadership
• Coordinate care when players move between the Dominican Republic, U.S. affiliates, and other Latin American locations, confirming a receiving clinician, medical records, restrictions, and a current treatment plan
• Maintain appropriate contact with players rehabbing away from the academy or returning home in the off-season, coordinating local providers and follow-up with the responsible Mets medical staff

Documentation and Quality Improvement

• Ensure timely, accurate documentation of evaluations, treatment, medical communication, and participation status in approved systems, consistent with MLB standards, organizational policy, and applicable privacy requirements
• Review staff documentation and objective testing for completeness and consistency; protect confidential records and use approved channels for sharing information across locations
• Review injury patterns, rehabilitation outcomes, recurrent injuries, and care delays with medical and performance leadership; use findings and current evidence to improve local practice and staff education

Resources and Administration

• Manage academy medical supplies, inventory, equipment maintenance, and approved spending in coordination with the Minor League Medical Coordinator and academy operations
• Support purchasing, invoices, provider arrangements, and medical travel logistics; anticipate seasonal demand and communicate coverage or resource gaps before they disrupt care
• Maintain professional credentials and continuing education, evaluate new clinical tools with medical leadership, and contribute to department initiatives and related duties as assigned
• Mentor and upskill local and US based medical staff at the Dominican Academy

Qualifications & Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training or a related field and current Board of Certification (BOC) certification as an Athletic Trainer. Alternative degree: Physical Therapist with current certification
• Current professional credentials and authorization for assigned practice locations, plus CPR and AED certification
• Five or more years of full-time experience in professional baseball
• Demonstrated staff leadership, mentorship, delegation, and interdisciplinary communication skills
• Strong clinical reasoning and skills in injury evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and case management
• Knowledge of baseball injury management and return-to-play demands, including throwing progressions
• Professional proficiency in spoken and written Spanish and English, including medical communication
• Experience with MLB electronic medical records systems and timely, accurate documentation
• Independent judgment, cultural awareness, and a commitment to player trust, confidentiality, and professional boundaries
• Primary presence in the Dominican Republic, willingness to travel internationally, and availability for unconventional baseball hours

Desireable

• Master’s degree or higher in Athletic Training, sports medicine, or a related field
• Medical leadership experience in a Dominican Republic academy or Latin American baseball program
• Knowledge of healthcare systems and provider networks in the Dominican Republic and Latin America
• Experience with complex rehabilitation, international player transitions, and medical evaluations of prospective signees
• Advanced clinical certifications and experience with objective strength testing, athlete monitoring, and injury data
