The Fort Worth City Attorney’s Office is a collegial team of legal professionals providing excellent legal service to the City of Fort Worth. As an in-house legal department, we practice in a wide range of civil and criminal law on behalf of and for the City, including general counsel, litigation, and prosecutorial areas. A Legislative Intern position is available with the City of Fort Worth City Attorney's Office to provide on-site administrative, logistical, and legislative support to the City's Governmental Affairs Liaison during the 90th Texas Legislative Session in Austin. This temporary assignment is anticipated to run from January 3, 2027 through May 31, 2027, with the possibility of extension based on City needs if a special session is called. The intern will work in a fast-paced environment where schedules and priorities may change quickly based on legislative activity.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current or recently graduated within the last six (6) months of application or working towards a specialization in a vocational field, or a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a related field of study
- No previous work experience is required
Preferred Qualifications:
- Coursework or demonstrated interest in government, political science, public administration, public policy, law, business, communications, or a related field
- Familiarity with the Texas legislative process, municipal government, or public policy
- Experience coordinating calendars, meetings, or events and managing multiple time-sensitive priorities
- Strong written and verbal communication, organization, attention to detail, and ability to work professionally with elected officials, legislative staff, stakeholders, and City employees
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and experience organizing information in spreadsheets, databases, or similar tracking tools
The Legislative Intern - job responsibilities include:
- Provides day-to-day administrative and logistical support to the Governmental Affairs Liaison, including coordinating assignments, deadlines, materials, and general office needs
- Serves as a legal and legislative runner as needed, delivering and retrieving time-sensitive documents and materials between City representatives, legislative offices, committee rooms, and other Austin locations
- Monitors legislative calendars, committee hearing notices, and other Capitol activity and communicates relevant schedule changes and updates
- Assists with tracking municipal-related legislation and policy issues using legislative tracking tools, spreadsheets, and databases; prepares status reports and updates as directed
- Attends committee hearings, briefings and other legislative proceedings as requested; takes notes and summarizes key information and follow-up items
- Conducts basic research on proposed legislation and municipal policy issues and assists with preparing background information, briefing materials, contact lists, and shared record
- Assists with meeting and event logistics, special projects, and other general administrative work as assigned
- Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City's Personnel Rules and Regulations
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
This position is based in Austin, Texas and requires in-person work during the 90th Texas Legislative Session. Work may include frequent walking and standing throughout the Capitol complex and other meeting locations, carrying and delivering documents or materials, and occasional early morning, evening, or irregular hours based on legislative activity. The temporary assignment is anticipated to end May 31, 2027 unless extended based on City needs.
Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, walking and repetitive motions.
Sedentary Work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) Background Check
Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A Misdemeanor Conviction, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions in the last 10 years, Class A Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication in the last 10 years, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and ALL Family Violence Convictions regardless of class.
