Job Description
Capability Based Planning - Practitioner
Level – 26/27
The Capability based planning - Practitioner is an individual contributor associated with the Enterprise Architecture Team within the Align Pillar. Working within methods, priorities and governance established by the Capability-Based Planning and Execution Lead, the role gathers evidence, analyzes capability maturity and develops architecture views that connect business capabilities with processes, information, applications, data, integrations, platforms and enabling technologies.
This role is accountable for the quality, traceability and currency of assigned capability-analysis and architecture artifacts. It does not own the enterprise capability-planning framework, assessment methodology, multi-year planning cycle, investment prioritization, executive alignment, governance decisions or cross-domain execution; those accountabilities remain with the Capability-Based Planning and Execution Lead.
Job Responsibilities
• Apply approved capability maps, value-stream structures, maturity criteria and heatmap conventions to assigned capability areas.
• Gather, validate and document evidence across people, process, technology and data dimensions using assessment criteria defined by the Capability-Based Planning and Execution Lead.
• Map assigned capabilities to supporting processes, applications, data, integrations, infrastructure and technology services, and maintain traceable relationships in the architecture repository.
• Translate approved assessment findings into architecture options, transition views, dependencies and measurable outcome statements for lead and domain-architect review.
• Develop current-state, target-state and transition architecture views for assigned capability areas using approved standards and templates.
• Analyze maturity evidence to identify capability gaps, root causes, interdependencies and improvement opportunities, and provide findings to inform lead-owned roadmap and investment prioritization.
• Supply validated architecture inputs and dependency information to portfolio and domain teams for incorporation into roadmaps and plans owned by those teams.
• Conduct discovery sessions and working meetings to capture evidence, assumptions, decisions and unresolved questions; escalate matters requiring governance or executive alignment.
• Maintain assigned capability and architecture artifacts in the approved enterprise architecture repository, including relationships, metadata, status and supporting evidence.
• Produce factual maturity and architecture reporting for assigned capabilities, highlighting evidence gaps, dependencies, risks and items requiring lead review.
• Represent Enterprise Architecture in tool, vendor and RFP assessments associated with capability-maturity evolution, evaluating capability fit, architecture alignment, interoperability, data, security, scalability, resilience, lifecycle sustainability and technical risk; document findings and recommendations for the accountable sourcing, domain and governance decision makers.
• Analyze the application, data, integration, security, platform and infrastructure implications of approved capability outcomes with the relevant domain architects.
• Assist in the authoring of enterprise blueprints, reference architectures, and golden paths that standardize the software development lifecycle (SDLC) across all business units.
• Document SDLC and DevOps dependencies when an assigned capability change affects engineering delivery, then coordinate with the accountable platform or engineering owner.
• Champion and promote the modernization of legacy governance processes, converting manual, gate-based approvals into automated, telemetry-driven continuous assurance.
Basic Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, business, engineering or related discipline.
• 3+ years of relevant experience in business architecture, enterprise architecture, business analysis, product strategy, capability planning or technology road mapping.
• Practical experience applying established capability models, maturity criteria, heatmaps, value streams and architecture methods to assigned analysis.
• Ability to gather, validate, structure and document evidence across people, process, technology and data dimensions using defined criteria.
• Ability to connect business outcomes to application, data, integration, platform, security and infrastructure implications.
• Experience developing architecture options and current-state, target-state and transition views from approved assessment findings.
• Experience maintaining traceability among capabilities, processes, applications, data, integrations, infrastructure and technology services.
• Ability to prepare objective value, risk, readiness, technical-debt, cost and capacity analysis that informs decisions made by accountable leaders.
• Strong discovery facilitation, analytical thinking, visual storytelling and stakeholder communication skills, including clear escalation of unresolved matters.
• Experience maintaining architecture and roadmap artifacts with clear metadata, evidence, assumptions, dependencies and status.
• Experience with architecture or planning tools such as LeanIX, Ardoq, Alfabet, Visio, Jira, Azure DevOps, PowerPoint or Power BI.
• Ability to produce concise, evidence-based architecture recommendations and reporting for lead, domain-architect and portfolio review.
• Working knowledge of modern technology delivery, including SDLC and DevOps concepts, sufficient to assess roadmap dependencies and collaborate with engineering specialists.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree or MBA in a relevant discipline.
• TOGAF, Business Architecture Guild, product management, Agile or related training.
• Experience in life sciences or another regulated industry.
• Familiarity with portfolio planning, investment prioritization and benefits measurement.
• Experience using LeanIX or another enterprise architecture repository and Power BI or an equivalent analytics platform.
• Experience creating reusable capability models, assessment templates, heatmaps, roadmap views, scorecards and architecture artifacts.
• Ability to identify shared-platform opportunities and application rationalization considerations through capability analysis.
• Practical AI literacy, including identifying appropriate AI-assisted opportunities, limitations, risks and required human oversight.
• Experience using approved AI capabilities responsibly while protecting confidential, personal, regulated and proprietary information.
• Ability to critically evaluate AI-generated outputs, validate important conclusions against authoritative evidence and follow enterprise Responsible AI, security, privacy, legal and compliance requirements.
