The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) applies cutting-edge technology to operating a reliable electricity system, managing competitive markets for wholesale electricity, and planning for the Empire State's energy future. Our summer internship programs give young professionals the opportunity to gain a fundamental understanding of New York electricity markets, bulk electricity systems and how we plan for New York State’s energy future.
The NYISO is seeking multiple Project Management Interns to support a variety of business and technology initiatives across the organization. This internship provides hands-on experience working alongside project managers, business analysts, product owners, and technical teams to help plan, coordinate, track, and deliver projects that support the NYISO's critical mission.
Interns will gain practical exposure to project management methodologies, business analysis, process improvement, technology implementation, and emerging tools such as artificial intelligence (AI). Through meaningful project assignments, interns will develop professional communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and organizational skills while contributing to real business outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Support day-to-day project management activities across business and technology initiatives.
- Assist with project planning, scheduling, task tracking, status reporting, and budget monitoring.
- Help identify, document, and track project risks, issues, dependencies, and action items.
- Coordinate with cross-functional stakeholders to gather information and support project execution.
- Develop and maintain project documentation, reports, presentations, dashboards, and meeting materials.
- Assist with gathering and documenting business and functional requirements.
- Support testing, validation, and implementation activities for project deliverables.
- Analyze business processes and recommend opportunities for increased efficiency and improvement.
- Utilize AI and automation tools to support project coordination, documentation, reporting, and process enhancement efforts.
- Conduct research, prepare recommendations, and present findings to project teams and stakeholders.

Interns may have the opportunity to contribute to projects in areas such as:
- Information Technology infrastructure and cybersecurity initiatives
- Software development and system implementation projects
- Electric market products and market design enhancements
- Grid operations and operational technology projects
- Business process improvement and automation initiatives
- AI pilots, proof-of-concept projects, and productivity solutions
- Project management office (PMO) planning, reporting, and portfolio management activities
Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Business Administration, Project Management, Information Systems, Information Technology, Engineering, Computer Science, Business Analytics, Data Science, Energy Management, or a related field.
- Strong interest in project management, business analysis, technology, or process improvement.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
- Demonstrated initiative, attention to detail, and willingness to learn.
- Experience with project management, business analysis, process mapping, reporting tools, or AI technologies is a plus, but not required.
The NYISO offers the flexibility to work both in the office and remotely, providing our employees with an enhanced work life balance. This internship will be a hybrid program, with the expectation that employees will be local to the Albany, NY area.
