Job Description Summary

Instructors are responsible for the facilitation of student learning and the ongoing development of curriculum that meets the needs of students and employers utilizing instructional strategies that promote student success. The Instructor – Emergency Medical Services – Paramedic provides classroom, laboratory, clinical, field, and practical instruction consistent with applicable Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS), Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS), National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), accreditation, and Fox Valley Technical College requirements. The instructor facilitates student learning through classroom instruction, hands-on skills development, simulation, assessment, clinical and field education, and other instructional activities designed to prepare students for successful careers in Emergency Medical Services.

This is a limited-term position, with an expected duration of May 24, 2027.

Job Description

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position.  Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully to be qualified for the position.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

 

• Learning Facilitation – Foster student learning by developing and utilizing appropriate instructional strategies to meet diverse student needs and support student engagement. Create learning experiences that integrate instructional technologies and multiple delivery methodologies, including in-person, hybrid, virtual, and online instruction, as appropriate.
• EMS Instruction & Skills Development – Provide classroom, laboratory, simulation, clinical, field, and practical instruction consistent with applicable EMS curriculum, competencies, standards, and scope of practice. Demonstrate and evaluate EMS skills and provide students with opportunities to develop the knowledge, judgment, technical skills, and professional behaviors necessary for successful EMS practice.
• Assessment – Assess student learning and provide regular feedback to support student success. Utilize written examinations, practical skills evaluations, simulation, competency assessments, and other appropriate methods to evaluate student performance. Use assessment results and applicable data to identify opportunities for instructional and program improvement.
• Curriculum Development – Develop and continually revise curriculum and instructional materials that are competency-based, current, consistent with employer and industry expectations, and aligned with applicable College, DHS, WTCS, NREMT, and accreditation requirements.
• Classroom & Training Environment Management – Fulfill assigned teaching schedules; maintain accurate attendance, grades, skills documentation, and other required student records; and maintain classroom, laboratory, and training environments with an emphasis on safety, organization, equipment security, and student engagement. Ensure required course materials and instructional resources are available to students.
• Clinical & Field Education Support – Coordinate and support applicable clinical, field, and experiential learning activities in accordance with program and accreditation requirements. Collaborate with EMS agencies, healthcare organizations, clinical partners, preceptors, and College staff to support student learning and successful completion of required experiences.
• Team Participation – Support the College by engaging in division, department, program, and team activities and meetings, including planning, development, scheduling, budgeting, accreditation activities, and College initiatives. Collaborate with fellow instructors and staff and remain current with internal and external changes, initiatives, regulations, and standards affecting EMS education and practice.
• Business & Community Engagement – Build and maintain positive relationships with EMS agencies, fire departments, healthcare organizations, clinical partners, employers, and community stakeholders. Participate in advisory committees, external meetings, outreach activities, recruitment efforts, professional associations, and customized training that support the College and EMS programming.
• Student Success & Support – Serve as an advocate for students and engage in activities that help students successfully complete their education and reach their professional goals. Collaborate with Student Services and provide appropriate academic, course, career, certification, clinical, field, and EMS-related guidance and connect students with College resources when appropriate.
• Professional Development – Continually improve knowledge and skills related to emerging trends, current EMS and critical-care practices, instructional methodologies, simulation, technology, and applicable regulatory requirements. Maintain Faculty Quality Assurance System requirements and all licenses, certifications, and professional credentials required for assigned instruction and program compliance.
• Program Accreditation & Compliance – Support and maintain Paramedic program accreditation and State of Wisconsin program approval. Participate in self-study, continuous improvement, required reporting and documentation, education meetings and workshops, and compliance with applicable College, DHS, WTCS, accreditation, and other regulatory requirements.

Non-Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Participate in applicable committees, program meetings, and team activities.
• Assist during peak instructional or program periods.
• Perform minor administrative tasks associated with instructional responsibilities.
• Demonstrate flexibility in teaching assignments, including potential instruction during daytime, evening, weekend, or summer hours and at off-campus locations as needed.
• Assist with routine inspection, cleaning, organization, and care of classroom, laboratory, simulation, and EMS training equipment.
• Assist in organizing and coordinating EMS-related events, simulations, community education activities, recruitment efforts, and other program initiatives.
• Perform other duties as assigned that support the mission of Fox Valley Technical College and the success of EMS education and programming.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Experience Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Emergency Medical Services, a health science, or a related and appropriate medical field; OR possess a degree at the level in which they are teaching, additional experience beyond what is required, and a plan to obtain a bachelor’s degree with approval by the Vice President – Learning/Chief Academic Officer.
• Master’s degree in Emergency Medical Services, a health science, or a related and appropriate medical field from an accredited institution is preferred.
• Minimum of two years full-time (4,000 hours if part-time) of occupational experience providing emergency medical care and/or critical care as a Paramedic, RN, or in the field being taught.
  • At least one year (2,000 hours) shall be within five years prior to appointment.
  • One year may be waived for occupational instructors with at least two years of post-secondary teaching experience in the appropriate field within five years prior to appointment. Five years of occupational experience is preferred.

In evaluating candidates for this position, Fox Valley Technical College may consider an exception to the education and experience requirements in the event of emergency staffing situations, pending credentials, specialized expertise or renowned qualifications of candidate, emerging fields, or lack of candidate availability.  Exceptions must be approved by the Vice President of Learning/Chief Academic Officer.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:

• Must have and maintain National Registry Paramedic certification and Wisconsin State Paramedic license.
• Wisconsin Critical Care endorsement preferred.
• Must have and maintain Wisconsin EMS Instructor II licensure/certification and qualifications to teach Paramedic, Advanced EMT, EMT, and EMR as required by applicable Wisconsin EMS requirements.
• American Heart Association instructor recognition in BLS, ACLS, and PALS required. Training Center Faculty status is required when assigned responsibilities require that designation.
• Proficiency utilizing learning management systems and applicable instructional technologies, including EMS instructional and clinical tracking tools such as Platinum Planner, FISDAP, or comparable systems.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to effectively demonstrate, observe, evaluate, and provide feedback regarding EMS psychomotor and patient-care skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with students, employees, patients, clinical partners, EMS agencies, healthcare professionals, and other audiences.
• Ability to adapt quickly to changing demands, assignments, instructional environments, and circumstances to meet student needs.
• Commitment to continuous improvement in instructional quality through innovative methodologies, simulation, technology, techniques, and delivery methods.
• Valid driver’s license and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) when operating FVTC vehicles or traveling between instructional locations as required by the position.

Work Environment

• Work Location: Primarily in-person at Fox Valley Technical College’s Public Safety Training Center and other approved instructional, clinical, field, satellite, or partner locations as assigned.
• Classroom & Laboratory Environment: Instruction is provided in classrooms, EMS laboratories, simulation environments, and other hands-on instructional settings.
• Clinical & Field Settings: Instruction or student supervision may occur in hospitals, clinics, ambulance services, fire departments, EMS agencies, or other approved clinical and field environments.
• Simulation & Practical Training: Work may involve realistic patient-care simulations, EMS equipment, patient movement activities, emergency response scenarios, and other hands-on training exercises.
• Outdoor Instruction: Some instructional activities may occur outdoors and in varying weather or environmental conditions.
• Virtual Work: Some instructional preparation, meetings, documentation, or other activities may be completed in a hybrid or remote setting when appropriate.
• Schedule: Teaching assignments may include daytime, evening, weekend, or summer hours depending upon course and program needs.
• Travel: Position may require travel between FVTC locations and to clinical, field, employer, or other approved instructional sites.
• Exposure: Depending on the instructional assignment, work may involve exposure to conditions typically associated with EMS and healthcare environments and requires adherence to applicable safety, infection-control, and PPE requirements.
• Flexibility: The work environment and instructional assignment may change based upon College, program, regulatory, and student needs.

Physical Requirements

• Sitting: Ability to sit for periods of time while performing instructional preparation, documentation, computer-based tasks, classroom instruction, and other assigned responsibilities.
• Standing and Walking: Ability to stand and walk for extended periods while providing classroom, laboratory, simulation, clinical, field, or practical instruction.
• Mobility: Ability to move throughout classroom, laboratory, simulation, clinical, field, and EMS training environments and position oneself as necessary to demonstrate, observe, and evaluate patient-care skills.
• Patient-Care Skills: Ability to demonstrate and evaluate EMS patient assessment, treatment, movement, and other psychomotor skills associated with assigned instruction.
• Lifting and Carrying: Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds and assist with lifting, moving, and positioning patients, EMS equipment, stretchers, simulation equipment, and training materials using appropriate team-lifting techniques and assistive devices.
• Pushing and Pulling: Ability to push, pull, position, or otherwise manipulate EMS training equipment and instructional materials as necessary for assigned teaching activities.
• Fine Motor Skills: Ability to perform precise hand movements and manual tasks associated with patient assessment, medical equipment, EMS skills, instructional technology, and other training activities.
• Repetitive Motions: Ability to perform repetitive motions associated with computer use, instructional demonstrations, skills practice, and applicable equipment.
• Communication: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with students, employees, patients/simulated patients, clinical partners, and other stakeholders in classroom, laboratory, simulation, clinical, and field environments.
• Climbing: Ability to climb stairs and access ambulances, training environments, clinical settings, and other instructional locations as required.
• Travel: Ability to travel to various FVTC facilities, clinical sites, EMS agencies, and other approved instructional locations as required.
• Driving: Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a vehicle when required for assigned instructional responsibilities.
• Personal Protective Equipment: Ability to wear required PPE appropriate to assigned EMS, clinical, laboratory, simulation, or field activities.
• Equipment Setup: Ability to set up, move, organize, clean, and store EMS simulation equipment, medical equipment, manikins, audiovisual equipment, and other instructional materials as necessary.

Additional Information

Pay: $73,900.00 - $86,900.00

Pay is based on a multitude of factors, including experience, qualifications, education, relevant certifications, internal equity, and market data. The range listed is the full-time equivalent range and will be prorated based on weekly hours.
