The Opportunity

Our Technical Safety & Services organization is seeking an experienced Incident & Emergency Management Specialist to join the Incident & Emergency Management team. The position may be based in Calgary, Alberta, Houston, Texas, or Charleston, WV.

Reporting to the Manager, Incident & Emergency Management, this position provides senior-level technical leadership and subject matter expertise in incident investigations, emergency preparedness and response, governance, and assurance. The role leads complex and high-consequence investigations, supports the organization during emergency events, and evaluates the effectiveness of Incident and Emergency Management programs across the enterprise.

The successful candidate will work closely with operational leaders, business units, and functional partners to identify systemic causes, translate lessons learned into sustainable improvements, strengthen emergency response capabilities, and promote consistent application of company requirements.

What You'll Do

·       Provide enterprise governance and subject matter expertise for Incident Management and Emergency Management programs across business units, operating regions, and functional teams.

·       Develop, maintain, and continuously improve incident management and emergency management frameworks, standards, procedures, tools, guidance, and program expectations.

·       Advise leaders, operations teams, and functional partners on event classification, response expectations, investigation requirements, corrective action management, lessons learned, and regulatory considerations.

·       Conduct and lead incident investigations, including facilitating cause analysis, documenting findings, developing corrective actions, and supporting lessons learned.

·       Facilitate consistent application of Incident and Emergency Management requirements by supporting alignment sessions, decision-making discussions, cross-functional reviews, and program implementation activities.

·       Share best practices, lessons learned, emerging risks, and improvement opportunities across the organization to strengthen capability, consistency, and organizational learning.

·       Provide quality review and technical assurance of investigation reports, emergency response documentation, incident records, corrective actions, and related program deliverables.

·       Plan and execute assurance activities, program assessments, field verifications, management system reviews, and corrective action effectiveness evaluations to confirm requirements are understood, implemented, and sustained.

·       Analyze incident data, emergency response performance, recurring causes, corrective action trends, and assurance results to identify systemic issues and enterprise improvement priorities.

·       Support emergency preparedness and response capability through development, review, testing, facilitation, and improvement of plans, procedures, training materials, exercises, and response tools.

·       Coach, mentor, and build capability among investigators, emergency management practitioners, operational leaders, and functional partners while representing Incident and Emergency Management on cross-functional initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

·    Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Emergency Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.

·    Eight (8) or more years of progressive experience in incident investigation, emergency management, operational risk, process safety, regulatory compliance, management systems, or a related field.

·    Experience leading incident investigations and developing investigation findings, causal conclusions, corrective actions, and formal investigation reports. OR Demonstrated knowledge and experience in Incident Command System principles and emergency response organizational structures.

·    Experience conducting assurance reviews, audits, assessments, or management system evaluations.

·    Demonstrated ability to independently manage complex assignments involving multiple stakeholders, competing priorities, and sensitive information.

·    Strong facilitation, critical thinking, problem-solving, and technical writing skills.

·    Demonstrated ability to influence decisions and drive improvement without direct authority.

·    Strong interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work effectively with frontline employees, technical specialists, operational leaders, and senior management.

·    Ability to communicate complex technical information through clear reports, presentations, recommendations, and leadership briefings.

Preferred Qualifications

·    Professional Engineer designation or another relevant professional certification.

·    Formal training or certification in Cause Mapping, Root Cause Analysis, TapRooT, or a comparable investigation methodology.

·    Advanced Incident Command System or emergency management training.

·    Experience participating in or supporting an Incident Support Team, Incident Management Team, Emergency Operations Center, or comparable emergency response organization.

·    Experience within the energy, pipeline, utility, petrochemical, manufacturing, transportation, or another high-hazard industry.

·    Experience using incident management systems, data analytics, dashboards, and performance reporting tools.

·    Ability to speak Spanish or communicate effectively in Spanish is considered an asset.

This position requires candidates to:   

·       This position will involve travel and overnight stays away from home (estimated up to 20% of work schedule)   

·       Have current, valid authorization to travel internationally (including but not limited to Canada, US and Mexico) 

·       Successfully complete a Criminal background check (US Applicants) 

·       The role may require participation in an emergency response or on-call rotation.
