The Finance function is responsible for supporting attainment of the company’s strategic objectives through:
- Accurate and timely monitoring and reporting of financial and business performance
- Providing commercially appropriate pricing that reflects fair value for customers
- Managing credit decisions in line with the organisational risk appetite
- Supporting customers in financial difficulty to deliver good outcomes
The function assists and guides the business in ensuring effective, legally compliant and sustainable business decisions, whilst maintaining effective controls to manage risks and ensure robust processes across the accounting activities.
This role within the Financial Planning & Analysis team plays a key role in supporting the organisation's financial performance through effective cost management and financial analysis. The FP& A Analyst will work closely with stakeholders across multiple business functions to understand cost drivers, challenge expenditure, identify opportunities for efficiency, and provide insightful financial analysis to support decision making. A significant proportion of the role will involve monitoring operational spend, supporting forecasting and budgeting activities, and helping business leaders understand and manage their costs against agreed targets.
Key Responsibilities
- Cost Management & Control: Monitor departmental expenditure against budget and forecast, identifying variances, investigating root causes, and supporting corrective actions where required.
- Month-End Cost Accounting: Own and coordinate the preparation, review and posting of accruals and prepayments, including assessing supporting information and determining appropriate accounting treatment, ensuring costs are accurately recognised in the correct accounting period. Perform relevant reconciliations and control checks and work closely with business stakeholders to validate expenditure, challenge assumptions and maintain the integrity of month-end financial reporting.
- Build strong relationships with stakeholders across the business to understand operational activities, cost drivers, investment requirements and financial risks.
- Balance Sheet Controls & Risks: Own the review and reconciliation of relevant balance sheet accounts
- Audit Support and Ownership: Act as the key contact for auditors for the assigned areas, providing supporting documentation, explanations and evidence as required, and taking responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of the related accounting records. Reconciliations and balances.
- Cost Financial Analysis and Reporting: Run and review transaction reports, analyse financial data, identify trends and variances. Prepare actual versus budget and forecast analysis. Provide clear explanations of key drivers and movements to support the Finance Business Partners with variance analysis.
- Support governance processes by reviewing expenditure, challenging assumptions and promoting financial discipline across business functions.
- Support the preparation of budgets, forecasts and strategic plans, ensuring expenditure is accurately reflected and aligned to business objectives.
- Support projects, transformation initiatives and investigations by providing detailed financial analysis and recommendations.
Skills and Experience
Essential
- Experience within a management accounting, financial accounting, FP&A or commercial finance environment.
- Good understanding of management accounting principles, including accruals, prepayments, month-end processes and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, financial modelling and data analysis.
- Experience analysing financial information and explaining financial performance, risks and opportunities.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify root causes and translate findings into actionable recommendations.
- Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly and effectively to both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
- Strong stakeholder management skills with the confidence to challenge assumptions and support cost control discussions across the business.
- Proactive and inquisitive approach, with a desire to continuously improve processes, reporting and financial outcomes.
Desirable
- AAT Level 4 qualified (or equivalent) and progressing towards a professional accounting qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent). We are seeking candidates with strong technical accounting foundations who are keen to continue their professional development.
- Experience using Power BI or similar reporting and visualisation tools.
- Experience supporting budgeting, forecasting and planning processes.
- Experience working within a regulated financial services environment.
- Exposure to process improvement or finance transformation initiatives.
