About the Opportunity

As an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Wellbeing Navigator Peer, you'll use your own lived experience, cultural knowledge and recovery journey to support First Nations people experiencing mental health challenges, psychological distress, substance use and/ or addiction.

Working as part of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Local, you'll walk alongside people as they identify their goals, build on their strengths and connect with the supports, services, culture and community that matter to them. Through intentional peer support, positive role modelling and culturally safe practice, you'll help create hope, strengthen wellbeing and support meaningful participation in community life.

Key elements of your new role will include:

• Provide intentional, strengths-based peer support using lived and living experience
• Offer one-on-one support, care planning and ongoing recovery support
• Facilitate group peer sessions that build connection, confidence and resilience
• Support people to develop everyday skills and engage with community services
• Manage a caseload of participants, supporting them throughout their recovery journey in a culturally safe, trauma-informed way

About You

You identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and bring your own lived and living experience of mental health challenges, psychological distress and/or substance use. Your recovery journey has given you the empathy, strength and insight to walk alongside others and share your story in a safe, respectful and empowering way.

You are strongly connected to First Nations communities and understand the importance of culture, community and Country. Your ability to build safe and trusting relationships helps people feel seen, heard and understood, while your cultural knowledge and awareness supports care that is culturally safe, inclusive and meaningful.

What you’ll bring:

• Is acknowledged by First Nations community and leadership
• Personal experience of mental distress and accessing and navigating healthcare services, including mental health services and a willingness to draw upon your experiences and recovery journey to inform your work
• Certificate IV/Diploma in Mental Health, AOD or tertiary qualification in social science or 1+ year relevant work experience in the Mental Health Sector or Intentional Peer Support Training
• Evidence of right to work in Australia
• Current and valid driver licence and willingness to undertake travel as part of your role
• Satisfactory National Police Check, Working with Children Check and NDIS Worker Screening Check, or willingness to undertake
• NDIS Workers Orientation module certificate – free online course

Wellways, in partnership with APMHA Healthcare and GV Health, is excited to be working together across Greater Shepparton, Strathbogie, and Moira to strengthen mental health and wellbeing support across the region. Together, we're aiming to offer services that meet the unique needs of individuals in our community, whenever and wherever they are needed.
