About the position:
The Enterprise Geospatial Solution Architect is responsible for the platform architecture of Chevron's enterprise geospatial capability and owns the architectural decisions that carry Chevron’s Map Hubs into its next AI horizon. This role defines the target-state design for ArcGIS Enterprise on Kubernetes, establishes how geospatial capability is composed, secured, deployed, and operated on Azure, and sets the platform patterns that delivery teams build against across Chevron's technical delivery centers in Houston, ENGINE, and Manila.
The Solution Architect works as a member of the Geospatial Architecture Team and owns the platform and infrastructure layer of that team's remit. The role architects the geospatial foundation on which the Enterprise Geospatial AI (EGAI) Hub runs — the services, data access paths, identity and security boundaries, and deployment substrate that make agentic geospatial AI possible and governable at enterprise scale — partnering closely with the AI Solution Architect who owns the EGAI Hub's agent architecture and with the Solution Architect for GIS Asset Class Delivery, who consumes these platform patterns. The role also owns the knowledge layer for the Enterprise Geospatial Engagement Framework: the semantic models, metadata and catalog structure, and provenance design that make Chevron Map Hub content discoverable and trustworthy to both people and agents.
This position requires strong expertise in ArcGIS Enterprise architecture, Kubernetes and Azure cloud-native design, CI/CD and infrastructure automation, and security and identity integration, along with working fluency in AI and agentic solution patterns as they apply to geospatial data. It is a hands-on engineering architecture role that requires holding clear architectural ownership of one domain while working in harmony with peer architects, Technical Manager, GIS Technical Leads, who are accountable for delivery execution, and a globally distributed delivery organization.
Key responsibilities:
· Own the target-state architecture for Chevron's enterprise geospatial platform, including the ArcGIS Enterprise on Kubernetes deployment model, federated server roles, topology, and the migration path from the current deployment.
· Architect the geospatial platform foundation for the Enterprise Geospatial AI Hub — geospatial services, data source access paths, schema and catalog retrieval at scale, identity and security boundaries, and deployment substrate — in partnership with the AI Solution Architect who owns the Hub's agent architecture.
· Design and maintain the knowledge layer for the Enterprise Geospatial Engagement Framework — semantic models, metadata and catalog structure, graph patterns, and the provenance model that attributes every result to a single authoritative source.
· Enforce vendor decoupling in the geospatial architecture: keep third-party geospatial and AI components behind narrow, well-defined service contracts so no Chevron delivery milestone depends on an external product roadmap.
· Define security and identity integration patterns for geospatial services and agent workloads — workload identity, scoped permissions, API gateway routing, secrets management, and platform logging and monitoring aligned to Chevron enterprise security standards.
· Develop and govern CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code automation for geospatial platform deployment on Azure, and drive the technical decoupling of platform administration from managed service provider dependency.
· Produce the architecture artifacts delivery runs on: reference architectures, integration patterns, architecture decision records, non-functional requirements, and target-state roadmaps.
· Partner with the GIS Foundation Technical Lead to translate architecture into a sequenced, capacity-realistic delivery roadmap, and keep platform change delivery aligned to the target state as it executes.
· Supply platform patterns, enterprise services, and architectural standards to the GIS Asset Class Delivery solution architecture practice, and review Asset Class designs for platform alignment.
· Align geospatial platform design to Chevron enterprise architecture standards and represent geospatial platform architecture in enterprise design and governance forums.
· Lead technical evaluation of build-versus-buy decisions for geospatial and geospatial-AI technology, including proof-of-concept design, evaluation criteria, and recommendations to leadership.
· Set engineering standards for the geospatial platform — environment strategy, release and upgrade cadence, observability, resilience, capacity, and cost management.
· Mentor ENGINE geospatial engineers, AI engineers, and platform engineers; conduct design and code reviews; and build durable geospatial architecture capability inside the ENGINE technical delivery center.
· Troubleshoot complex platform and integration issues, lead root cause analysis, and drive the architectural remediation that prevents recurrence.
· Collaborate across a global, multi-time-zone delivery footprint spanning Houston, ENGINE, and Manila, influencing technical direction without direct authority.
Required Qualifications:
Experience:
· 8-12 years of overall experience in GIS, cloud, or platform engineering, with 4+ years in enterprise geospatial architecture or a comparable platform architecture role
· Proven experience owning the architecture of a production enterprise GIS platform end-to-end, from design through deployment and sustained operations
· Experience operating within a peer architecture team on a shared target-state architecture, and alongside a delivery lead accountable for execution
· Experience working within a large, globally distributed enterprise, partnering with enterprise architecture, security, and business stakeholders across time zones
Education:
· Bachelor's degree in Geoinformatics, Computer Science, Engineering, Geology/Geophysics, or a related technical field
Technical Skills:
· Deep expertise in ArcGIS Enterprise architecture — base deployment components, federated server roles, security and authentication configuration, high availability topologies, and upgrade and migration strategy.
· Working knowledge of the ArcGIS Enterprise on Kubernetes cloud-native deployment model and how it differs from the Windows and Linux editions.
· Strong Kubernetes and container platform skills, and hands-on Azure experience across compute, storage, networking, identity, and security services.
· Practical experience building CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code automation for platform deployment (e.g., Ansible, Azure DevOps pipelines and repositories, or equivalent).
· Proficiency in Python and the ArcGIS API for Python for platform administration, content management, and automation; working knowledge of the ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript.
· Strong grounding in security architecture — enterprise identity and access management, role-based access control, service-to-service authentication, secrets management, API gateway patterns, and security logging.
· Solid understanding of enterprise data architecture as applied to spatial data: geodatabase design, spatial data management at scale, service publishing patterns, integration with enterprise data platforms, and data quality and lineage.
· Familiarity with AI and GenAI solution design — RAG, embeddings and vector search, agent and tool orchestration, evaluation, guardrails, and provenance — sufficient to architect the platform layer agentic solutions depend on and to partner credibly with AI architects and engineers.
· Experience with REST API design and integration, microservices, and enterprise observability and platform operations (logging, metrics, tracing, alerting, capacity and cost governance).
Architecture & Collaboration Skills:
· Strong system design skills, with the ability to reason about trade-offs across performance, cost, security, resilience, and delivery speed, and to document decisions so others can build against them.
· Ability to lead through ambiguity — to take an under-defined business need and produce a defensible target-state architecture and a sequenced path to reach it.
· Demonstrated ability to hold clear architectural ownership of one domain while collaborating on shared standards with peer architects, without siloed working.
· Proven ability to partner effectively with a delivery lead accountable for timelines, balancing architectural integrity against delivery constraints and resolving that tension collaboratively.
· Ability to operate successfully in a matrixed model with line management and technical direction coming from different leaders and geographies.
· Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain geospatial and AI architecture clearly to engineers, enterprise architects, and non-technical business and senior leadership audiences.
· Demonstrated capability in mentoring engineers and raising the technical standard of a delivery team.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Esri certification — Enterprise Administration Professional, Enterprise Architecture, or an equivalent current Esri technical certification.
· Direct experience deploying, operating, or migrating to ArcGIS Enterprise on Kubernetes.
· Experience with additional ArcGIS server roles and capability servers such as ArcGIS Knowledge Server, ArcGIS Notebook Server, ArcGIS Image Server, or real-time analytics with ArcGIS Velocity.
· Experience designing or implementing knowledge graphs, semantic layers, or enterprise metadata and catalog services, particularly where they ground AI or agent-based retrieval.
· Hands-on experience architecting or building LLM-based or agentic applications, including tool integration, orchestration, and evaluation.
· Experience with real-time geospatial data engineering and streaming ingestion architectures.
· Knowledge of energy and oil & gas domain workflows — exploration and subsurface, pipeline and midstream integrity and regulatory compliance, facilities and asset management, or field operations — and the spatial data types these workflows depend on.
· Experience with 3D, digital twin, imagery, or computer vision geospatial capabilities.
· SAFe certification and experience delivering in a scaled agile program environment with program increment planning.
· Experience in a global capability or technical delivery center model, including building engineering capability that transitions scope from managed service or staff augmentation providers to internal teams.
· Exposure to AI governance and responsible AI frameworks, and to enterprise risk, privacy, and compliance requirements.
