Job Description

Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC), located in Reno, Nevada, is seeking exceptional educators for an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Instructor position in a fast-paced, diverse educational environment. TMCC EMS Academy is one of the premier EMS educational institutions in the region. Our team of faculty and staff is solid and collaborative, with one goal in mind: To produce the absolute best EMS providers who embody our 3 core commitments: Character, Compassion, and Competence.

The major areas of responsibility are to teach and develop theory instruction, arrange appropriate learning experiences in the clinical and practice lab settings, grade and evaluate students in theory and the clinical and field settings, and coordinate theory and clinical instruction with other faculty to ensure appropriate learning experiences. When students are in clinical/field settings, faculty will act as liaisons between the students and the clinical/internship sites. Liaison work may require travel to hospitals and field sites.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A minimum of an associate degree in Fire, EMS, or other related field from an accredited institution, or a bachelor’s degree in any science, computers, education, or a field comparable as needs of the program dictates.
2. Current state of NV paramedic certification, or ambulance attendance license, or the ability to obtain by the start of the semester they are hired.
3. Four (4) years of experience as a full-time paramedic in EMS.
4. An EMS instructor endorsement on the Nevada EMS certification can be obtained by the start of the semester in which they are hired.
5. Two (2) years’ experience in teaching in EMS, preferably in an academy setting, or at least ten (10) years of EMS experience in place of teaching.
6. Be able to locate the region, if necessary.
 

Preferred Qualifications

1. Master’s Degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution preferred.
2. Eight years of experience in a full-time paid paramedic position in emergency services.
3. Three years of experience teaching in an emergency services academy setting.
4. NAEMSE I instructor completion
5. Have experience teaching in an online capacity and have familiarity with software programs and computers
6. AHA instructor in BLS, ACLS, and PALS
7. NAEMT instructor in PHTLS or ITLS instructor
 

Academic Faculty Responsibilities

Teaching and workload assignments are scheduled throughout the calendar year, and may require evening and weekend obligations at one or more college locations.

1. Teach 30 (15/15) credit or contact hours during the academic year, August through May, in various modalities as assigned, including in-person, hybrid, online, live-virtual (hy-flex), and at high-school sites (Jump-Start dual credit), per the needs of the program.

2. Instruct students in EMS using appropriate course outcomes developed by college-wide subject area faculty; assess student performance in these courses by documenting in Canvas and other methods.

3. Prepare lesson plans, syllabi, and course information sheets, create appropriate teaching aids, and arrange provision of instructional materials and activities for student usage in classes and as homework assignments.

4. Support student learning outcomes assessment processes by teaching toward approved student learning outcomes and assessing student performance.

5. Assist with curriculum and program review, revision, and assessment. Aid in the development of new course materials and innovative instructional techniques that improve student learning.

6. Apply teaching techniques effective in a laboratory/clinical setting utilizing state-of-the-art delivery systems to include operation of simulation manikins, online platforms, organization of large-scale training scenarios, etc.

7. Assist with equipment usage and maintenance for the training program

8. Ensure safety precautions and guidelines are followed properly by both part-time faculty and students.

9. Use computer software programs to input, retrieve, and generate information necessary to perform/learn one’s job.

10. Work closely with department peers and administrators to become an effective teacher and contributing member of the academic unit.

11. Attend and actively participate in College events, department and division meetings, college or Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) committees, and community service activities.

12. Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current in field knowledge and pedagogies that expand breadth and depth of understanding in the EMS discipline. 

13. Annually define long and short-range professional development goals to remain current in the discipline and meet submission deadlines.

14. Complete training outlined in TMCC's Faculty Standards of Online Instruction, when and as needed.

15. Provide professional assistance to staff and students. Assist the department coordinator and associate dean in mentoring part-time faculty.

16. Hold 5 office-hours per week in a shared or private office.

17. Submit grades by the semester deadlines. 
18. Participate in student advisement, recruitment, and retention efforts (e.g., job fairs, college fairs, open houses, tours, semester kick-offs, and commencement as required by NFA).

19. Travel occasionally to community and workforce sites, conferences, events, and so on, per the needs of the program.

20. Communicate and interact in a professional and collegial manner with faculty, students, staff, and administration, in the best interests of the college and the people it serves.

21. Maintain sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students.

22. Comply with Public Safety Department policies and procedures, including agreed-upon instructor conduct.

23. Comply with published college and NSHE policies and procedures.

24. Uphold the Mission, Vision, and Values of TMCC and perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with them.

25. Adhere to the published codes of NSHE as detailed in the Board of Regents Handbook.

26. Adhere to the Code of Ethical Standards of the State of Nevada (Nevada Revised Statutes 281A.400-281A.480).

27. Maintain all professional certifications as required by NRS and NAC 450b. 

28. Be able to become an instructor and teach in American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), and NAEMT courses as they become available. 
29. Other duties as assigned by the Dean, Associate Dean, and Director of Paramedic Program.

Salary and Benefits Information:

Salary: Initial salary placement will be dependent on education level and years of experience. This position is a 9-month role, totaling 172 working days per year. The salaries listed below are based on this schedule, paid over 12 months:

Associate's: $51,400 - $61,680

Bachelor's: $57,823 - $69,388

Master’s: $60,634 - $72,761

Master’s + 30: $63,444 - $76,133

Ph.D: $68,739 - $82,487
