Position Overview

The EH&S Specialist I supports EH&S operational and compliance activities under the guidance of the EH&S Manager and more experienced team members. This role applies developing EH&S knowledge to assist with inspections, documentation, training coordination, waste management, emergency preparedness activities, and routine safety program support.

The EH&S Specialist II supports EH&S programs across Adaptive sites by applying experienced knowledge and sound judgment to routine compliance activities, inspections, incident review, training coordination, and program documentation. This role works with general direction on routine work, supports corrective actions and process improvements, and escalates more complex issues with recommended solutions.

EH&S 1

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions

EHS Program Support

  • Support administration of assigned EH&S program and routine compliance activities.
  • Conduct inspections, audits, and compliance assessments across laboratory, warehouse, and office environments.
  • Identify hazards, recommend corrective actions, and track completion of corrective actions.
  • Maintain EH&S records, metrics, dashboards, and compliance documentation.
  • Support regulatory inspections and internal audits.

Chemical Safety and Biological Safety

  • Assist with chemical inventory reconciliation and SDS administration.
  • Ensure proper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Provide guidance to employees regarding chemical and biological safety requirements.
  • Respond to and support spill clean-up initiatives and participate in incident investigations.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable DOT, RCRA, and IATA requirements.

Waste Management

  • Coordinate hazardous waste management activities and vendor interactions.
  • Conduct required inspections of waste accumulation areas.
  • Manage waste documentation, manifests, and compliance records according to
  • Provide coaching to laboratory personnel on waste handling procedures.

Emergency Preparedness & Safety Programs

  • Participate in emergency preparedness activities and evacuation drills.
  • Support training of evacuation coordinators and designated responders.
  • Ensure emergency equipment inspections are completed and documented.
  • Support development and implementation of emergency response procedures.
  • Support PPE availability and inventory levels.

Training and Technical Support

  • Deliver safety orientation and routine safety training programs.
  • Collaborate in the development and revision of EH&S procedures and work instructions.
  • Serve as a point of contact for routine EH&S questions from laboratory and operational personnel.

Occupational Health, Ergonomics, and Environmental Programs

  • Conduct ergonomic assessments and recommend corrective actions.
  • Aid in portions of occupational health and medical surveillance programs.
  • Support environmental compliance activities, data collection, and sustainability initiatives.
  • Assist in air monitoring and industrial hygiene sampling activities as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EH&S 2

EHS Program Support 

  • Support the implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of EH&S programs, SOPs, and safety-related documentation.
  • Provide technical guidance on hazard identification, risk reduction, and corrective actions.
  • Conduct routine inspections of laboratories, office areas, and support spaces to verify compliance and identify potential hazards. Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to support corrective actions and improve safety conditions
  • Track EH&S KPIs and metrics, identify trends, and recommend corrective actions
  • Support incident investigations, near-miss reviews, and corrective and preventive action tracking.
  • Maintain EH&S records, inspection documentation, training records, and compliance-related materials in accordance with applicable requirements.
  • Support the Health and Safety Committee, including coordination of membership, activities, and follow-up items.
  • Participate in internal and external audits and inspections by coordinating responses
  • Ensure contractors, consultants, and visitors receive appropriate safety onboarding and comply with site requirements.
  • Administer PPE programs, including selection, distribution, inventory management, compliance, lab coats, and prescription safety glasses.

Chemical Safety and Biological Safety

  • Support chemical and biological safety programs and ensure employees handling hazardous materials and biological agents are properly trained and compliant with applicable requirements
  • Manage the Safety Data Sheet program and ensure SDS information is accessible to employees.
  • Inspect chemical storage and laboratory work areas to verify proper labeling, segregation, storage, handling, and use of hazardous materials and biological agents. Maintain and reconcile chemical inventories and applicable biological safety records. Support chemical and biological spill preparedness, training, and response activities.
  • Maintain training records and certifications related to chemical safety, biological safety, and hazardous material handling.
  • Ensure personnel involved in the shipment of hazardous materials and biological materials are appropriately trained and compliant with applicable transportation regulations.

Waste Management

  • Ensure biological, chemical, and universal wastes are properly segregated, labeled, stored, and managed in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate with waste vendors for pickup, profiling, and disposal activities.
  • Monitor waste management practices and provide guidance to laboratory staff to support compliant waste handling.

Emergency Preparedness

  • Coordinate and document annual emergency evacuation drills.
  • Administer and maintain training. Assign and train emergency response roles, including floor wardens.
  • Ensure required safety signage and postings remain current and compliant.
  • Support emergency preparedness and response initiatives.
  • Ensure spill kits, first aid kits, and AEDs are inspected, stocked, and maintained.

Occupational Health, Ergonomics, and Environmental Programs

  • Support occupational health programs, including medical surveillance, vaccination programs, exposure monitoring, and air monitoring activities as required. Conduct ergonomic assessments and provide recommendations to reduce risk of injury.
  • Support environmental compliance programs, regulatory reporting activities, and sustainability initiatives.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

Required Qualifications EHS1

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related scientific, environmental, safety, or technical field; or equivalent combination of education, training, or regulated operations experience.
  • Experience supporting laboratory, manufacturing, warehouse, healthcare, or other regulated work environments.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA requirements, hazardous waste management practices, chemical safety principles, and incident reporting processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct inspections, identify hazards, recommend corrective actions, and maintain compliance documentation.
  • Strong organizational, communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and electronic record management systems.

Preferred Qualifications EHS1

  • Current certifications in HAZWOPER, RCRA, DOT and IATA certifications, and/or willing to become certified upon hire.
  • Professional EHS Certifications (e.g. ASP, CSP, CHMM, CIH etc.) are preferred but not required.

Required Qualifications EHS2

  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial hygiene, environmental health, chemistry, biology or a closely related scientific field.
  • 2+ years of directly related EHS experience, preferably in a laboratory environment.
  • Current certification HAZWOPER, RCRA, DOT and IATA certifications, and/or willing to become certified upon hire.
  • Professional EHS Certifications (e.g. ASP, CSP, CHMM, CIH etc.) are preferred or willing to become certified upon hire
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications or equivalent software is desirable.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, excellent customer service skills.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.

Working Conditions

This position may support multiple locations within the Greater Seattle Area and may occasionally require weekend or off hours work.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 45 pounds
  • Ability to walk frequently and stand for extended durations

 


Compensation

Hourly Rate EH&S1: $30.53 - $45.81
Hourly Rate EH&S2: $34.33 - $51.53

Adaptive’s posted compensation information includes a base salary (or hourly rate) range and summary of other available total compensation. The base salary range represents a minimum-to-maximum salary (or hourly rate) available to candidates upon extension of offer. Base salary is thoughtfully considered upon offer and is determined through multiple evaluation checks throughout the interview process, including: a candidate’s ability to meet minimum qualifications (skills/experience/education), a candidate’s ability to thoughtfully address preferred qualifications, current market conditions, and internal pay equity. Listed base salary is exclusive of bonus, commission, equity, differential pay, benefits, and other incentives.
