About the Role:
We are looking for a dynamic and ambitious Editor-in-Chief with a strong research background in quantum science and technology to lead Advanced Quantum Technologies.
This exciting role offers the opportunity to shape the scientific direction and strategic development of a leading interdisciplinary journal covering the rapidly evolving fields of quantum science, engineering, and technology.
The role combines scientific expertise, editorial experience, knowledge of the publishing landscape, and strong leadership, communication, and networking skills. The Editor-in-Chief will take overall responsibility for the journal’s editorial strategy and development, working closely with colleagues across Wiley to raise its profile and visibility, attract high-quality submissions, and strengthen its engagement with the international quantum research community.
The Editor-in-Chief is expected to participate actively in conferences, institute visits, and broader outreach activities, while overseeing manuscript assessment, peer review, and editorial decision-making. Ensuring the adoption of best practices and the highest standards of scientific quality, research integrity, and publication ethics will be a core responsibility of the role.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide overall scientific, editorial, and strategic leadership for Advanced Quantum Technologies.
- Develop and implement the journal’s editorial strategy from both scientific and publishing perspectives, in alignment with the objectives of the broader physical sciences journal portfolio.
- Strengthen the journal’s scientific position, reputation, visibility, and influence within the international quantum research community.
- Identify important and emerging research directions across quantum science and technology and translate these developments into editorial priorities and content-acquisition initiatives.
- Drive the acquisition of high-quality research articles, reviews, perspectives, and other authoritative content through targeted commissioning, professional networks, and strategic outreach.
- Develop special issues, special collections, and other editorial initiatives in collaboration with leading researchers, guest editors, editorial board members, and internal colleagues.
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with authors, peer reviewers, editorial board members, research institutions, scientific societies, and other key stakeholders.
- Build and engage an internationally representative editorial board that supports the journal’s scientific scope and strategic objectives.
- Leverage subject-matter expertise, professional networks, awareness of developments in the field, and desk research to drive submissions growth and attract high-quality content.
- Represent Wiley, Advanced Quantum Technologies, and the broader physical sciences portfolio at international conferences and through in-person and virtual outreach activities at universities and research institutes.
- Oversee the editorial assessment of submitted manuscripts, manage the peer review process, and make fair, timely, and well-informed editorial decisions.
- Ensure consistently high standards of scientific quality, editorial judgment, research integrity, publication ethics, and author service.
- Monitor the journal’s editorial and market performance, identify opportunities and challenges, and develop effective plans to support its sustainable growth.
- Collaborate closely with colleagues across editorial, publishing, marketing, communications, operations, and other departments to support the development of the journal and the wider portfolio.
- Provide editorial leadership, guidance, and support to members of the journal team, fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performing working environment.
- Contribute to broader portfolio initiatives and support innovation in scholarly publishing, Open Access, Open Research, and research communication.
Required Skills and Experience
- A PhD in quantum physics, quantum engineering, photonics, materials physics, electrical engineering, computer science, or another discipline closely related to quantum science and technology.
- Relevant postdoctoral research experience in quantum science, quantum engineering, quantum technology, or a closely related area.
- A strong research background and publication record, together with a deep understanding of the current quantum research landscape and its emerging directions.
- Broad scientific knowledge across relevant areas, such as quantum computing, quantum information, quantum communication, quantum sensing, quantum simulation, quantum materials, quantum photonics, and quantum engineering.
- Relevant editorial experience in scientific publishing, including experience in manuscript assessment, peer review management, editorial decision-making, content commissioning, or journal development.
- A solid understanding of scholarly publishing processes, research integrity, publication ethics, and best practices in peer review.
- The scientific credibility and communication skills required to engage confidently and effectively with leading researchers across the international quantum research community.
- Strong strategic thinking and the ability to translate scientific and publishing developments into editorial priorities and practical journal-development plans.
- Demonstrated ability to establish productive relationships with authors, reviewers, editorial board members, and other stakeholders.
- Excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal, and networking skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment and to achieve results through personal influence, sound judgment, and active engagement.
- A self-motivated, diplomatic, proactive, and flexible approach, with excellent organizational, prioritization, efficiency, and time-management skills.
- An excellent command of written and spoken English, including the ability to communicate complex scientific and editorial matters clearly and confidently.
- Familiarity with Open Access publishing models, Open Research practices, and current developments in scholarly communication.
- Willingness to travel domestically or internationally to attend conferences, visit research institutions, and represent the journal and Wiley within the scientific community.
- A keen interest in science and science communication, together with a strong motivation to promote innovation, integrity, inclusivity, and excellence in scholarly publishing.
