JOB SUMMARY:
The Dispatch Planner – In Training is a developmental role responsible for learning and supporting the planning and execution of freight movement across Stevens Transport’s network. While in training, this individual will not be assigned a dedicated team, region, or customer portfolio, but will instead rotate through core dispatch planning functions to build the skills required for a full Dispatch Planner seat.
This role supports capacity planning efforts by assisting in matching available equipment with freight demands, monitoring load progress, and helping resolve service disruptions. The Dispatch Planner – In Training will develop the ability to analyze data, communicate effectively with drivers and internal stakeholders, and contribute to operational efficiency in a highly dynamic environment.
Please note this position is on-site at Stevens Transport HQ in Dallas, TX due to operational collaboration needs.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in structured training across dispatch planning operations, including load planning, driver communication, and capacity management
- Assist in pairing available trucks with freight to support network coverage needs
- Support load monitoring activities, identifying and escalating service risks related to delays, weather, mechanical issues, or customer changes
- Communicate professionally with drivers and internal teams via phone, email, and transportation systems
- Learn to balance trailer pools and support repositioning strategies between surplus and deficit markets
- Assist in generating daily, weekly, and ad hoc operational reports
- Develop working knowledge of transportation systems, routing logic, and time/distance geography
- Observe and support senior Dispatch Planners in decision-making, problem-solving, and contingency planning
- Contribute to continuous improvement efforts by identifying trends, inefficiencies, and potential solutions
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications
- Strong computer skills in a Windows environment, including Outlook, Excel, and Word
- Ability to manage high volumes of inbound communication (email and messaging systems)
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing priorities
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
- Internship or early career experience in transportation, logistics, supply chain, or operations
- Familiarity with time/distance geography concepts
- Exposure to transportation management systems (e.g., AS/400 or similar platforms)
- Experience working in a deadline-driven or operations-focused environment

Work Experience:
- 2+ years of related experience in logistics, supply chain, operations, or similar field preferred
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred (Business, Supply Chain, Logistics, or related field)
