The John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering seeks a Director of Simulation Operations to provide strategic, operational, financial, and staff leadership for simulation-based education.
The Director is responsible for the operational infrastructure required to deliver medical school simulation across existing ASU simulation facilities and clinical partner sites while developing the operating model for the future ASU Health Simulation Center at ASU Health Headquarters (HQ).
Working in close partnership with the Director of Grace Center Operations and other ASU Health simulation leaders, the Director will develop coordinated approaches to staffing, scheduling, technology, equipment, procurement, data, quality, and resource utilization across the Shufeldt School simulation enterprise.
The Director will ensure operational readiness for the medical school's expanding simulation needs, including clinical skills, OSCE assessments, Transition to Clerkship, core clerkship simulations, post-clerkship simulations, procedural activities, and interprofessional simulations.
Salary Range: $103,700.00 to $110,000.00; DOE
Essential Duties:
Strategic & Operational Leadership
- Provide strategic and operational leadership for medical school simulation in alignment with Shufeldt School, ASU Health, and ASU priorities.
- Establish operational frameworks, policies, workflows, and performance standards for simulation-based education.
- Lead medical school simulation operations across ASU Health facilities and clinical partner sites.
- Translate curricular requirements and enrollment growth into scalable staffing, space, technology, and resource plans.
- Develop operations that support current programs and transition to the future ASU Health Simulation Center at ASU Health HQ.
- Collaborate with Edson and other ASU Health simulation leaders to develop shared operational practices, resources, and standards
Personnel & Team Leadership
- Lead, supervise, and develop assigned Shufeldt School simulation operations personnel.
- Establish staffing models based on program volume, complexity, operating hours, and service requirements.
- Oversee recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and professional development of simulation operations staff.
- Establish clear performance expectations and accountability for simulation operations personnel.
- Foster cross-training and collaboration across Shufeldt School, Edson, and ASU Health simulation teams.
Simulation & Technical Oversight
- Ensure operational readiness and lifecycle management of simulation equipment, technology, and learning assets.
- Establish processes for preventive maintenance, calibration, inventory, repair, replacement, and asset management.
- Partner with ASU Enterprise Technology on simulation software, audiovisual systems, networking, data systems, immersive technologies, and technical infrastructure.
- Evaluate and implement emerging technologies in collaboration with simulation, curriculum, and immersive learning leadership.
- Coordinate technology and equipment standards across ASU Health simulation programs when shared systems provide operational or financial benefit.
Medical Education Operations
- Ensure operational readiness for simulation-based education across the medical school curriculum.
- Translate curricular and assessment requirements into operational plans for staffing, standardized patients, space, equipment, technology, supplies, and technical support.
- Develop capacity and resource models based on enrollment, curricular requirements, program complexity, and available resources.
- Oversee simulation scheduling, prioritization, and resource allocation in alignment with Shufeldt School priorities.
- Identify and address scheduling conflicts, capacity constraints, and operational risks to ensure continuity of educational programs.
- Collaborate with curriculum, clinical education, assessment, course, and simulation leadership to operationalize new and existing simulation activities.
- Ensure reliable, consistent, and secure operations for standardized patient encounters, simulation-based assessments, and other performance-based educational activities.
- Develop scalable simulation and assessment operations to support enrollment growth and delivery across multiple locations.
Budget, Resource & Vendor Management
- Develop, manage, and monitor the medical school simulation operations budget in collaboration with Shufeldt School and ASU Health leadership.
- Develop annual and multiyear operating and capital forecasts, including staffing, technology, equipment, maintenance, and supply requirements.
- Develop cost and utilization models to support resource allocation and financial planning.
- Lead procurement, contract management, and vendor relationships for simulation equipment, technology, supplies, and services.
- Develop business cases for major investments, staffing changes, infrastructure needs, and equipment replacement.
- Coordinate purchasing and vendor strategies with Edson and other ASU Health simulation programs when shared procurement creates efficiencies.
- Monitor financial performance and identify opportunities to improve resource utilization and sustainability.
ASU Health HQ Simulation Center Planning
- Lead Shufeldt School operational planning for the future ASU Health Simulation Center at ASU Health HQ.
Translate medical education requirements into space, staffing, equipment, technology, storage, and workflow requirements.
- Participate in facility design, equipment planning, commissioning, activation, and transition activities.
- Develop staffing and operating models based on projected utilization and program growth.
- Partner with Edson and other ASU Health simulation leaders to develop shared operating standards and enterprise workflows for the future facility.
Compliance, Accreditation & Quality Assurance
- Ensure simulation operations comply with institutional policies, safety requirements, accreditation standards, and healthcare simulation best practices.
- Establish and monitor quality and safety measures, including processes for reviewing operational issues and technical failures.
- Lead data-informed continuous improvement to enhance operational effectiveness, reliability, and learner experience.
- Maintain operational readiness and documentation for accreditation, audits, and site visits.
Data & Performance Management
- Establish and maintain operational data systems, key performance indicators, and dashboards for simulation operations.
- Monitor utilization, capacity, operational performance, and financial performance across simulation programs and resources.
- Use performance data to inform staffing, scheduling, resource allocation, equipment acquisition, and capital planning.
- Collaborate with ASU Health simulation partners to establish common metrics and reporting standards for enterprise planning and performance management.
Institutional & External Engagement
- Represent medical school simulation operations in Shufeldt School, ASU Health, and/or ASU committees, planning initiatives, and enterprise simulation activities as needed.
- Serve as an operational liaison with HonorHealth and other clinical, community, and external partners.
- Collaborate with Edson and other ASU Health simulation leaders on shared resources, interprofessional programs, and enterprise simulation initiatives.
- Support distributed simulation, workforce development, continuing education, industry, grant-funded, and other partnership-based initiatives as appropriate.

Desired Qualifications:
- Master's degree in business administration, healthcare administration, education, healthcare simulation, engineering, or related field.
- Senior-level experience leading healthcare simulation operations or a similarly complex academic or healthcare operational unit.
- Experience within a medical school, academic medical center, health system, or interprofessional simulation program.
- Experience opening, expanding, or activating a simulation center, healthcare education facility, or comparable start-up operation.
- Experience with facility planning, design, commissioning, or activation.
- Experience managing operating and capital budgets.
- Knowledge of simulation technology, audiovisual systems, procedural simulation, immersive technologies, and simulation management systems.
- Demonstrated expertise in organizational design, process improvement, project management, or change management.
- Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS®), CHSOS-A®, Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE®), or ability to obtain an appropriate simulation certification within two years of hire
- Demonstrated experience managing complex operations involving personnel, facilities, technology, and multiple stakeholders.
- Experience developing or managing operating budgets and supervising professional staff.
- Experience with strategic planning, project management, resource allocation, and operational implementation.
- Experience with simulation technology, digital learning platforms, artificial intelligence, or other emerging technologies used in healthcare education and operations.
- Strong financial, analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Working Environment:
- Primarily an in-person leadership position based in Phoenix, Arizona.
- Requires regular presence across multiple ASU Health simulation locations.
- May require travel to clinical partner, community, and other ASU locations.
- Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
- Frequent physical demands may include stooping, bending, crawling under/around objects, reaching, lifting and pushing objects of varying weights up to 25 pounds (medium)
- May require occasional early morning, evening, or weekend work during major simulation programs, assessments, facility activation, or special events.
