Provides strategic, operational, and clinical leadership for the hospital Pharmacy, ensuring safe, effective, timely, compliant, and cost-efficient medication management across the organization. The Director of Pharmacy is accountable for building a high-performing department, advancing medication safety, strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration, and ensuring pharmacy services are aligned with organizational goals, regulatory requirements, and patient-care needs.Education/Training:
Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from an accredited school of pharmacy required.
Doctor of Pharmacy degree strongly preferred.
Advanced education or training in pharmacy leadership, healthcare administration, business management, medication safety, regulatory compliance, or quality/process improvement preferred.
Graduate degree such as MBA, MHA, MS, or equivalent preferred.
Completion of an accredited pharmacy residency or formal leadership-development program preferred.
Licenses/Certification:
• Current licensure in Massachusetts.
Required Qualifications and Skills:
Minimum of five years of progressive acute-care pharmacy leadership experience, including experience as a Pharmacy Director or comparable hospital pharmacy leadership role.
Comprehensive knowledge of hospital pharmacy operations, medication-management practices, applicable laws, regulatory requirements and accreditation standards.
Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with medical staff, nursing leadership, employees, and other organizational leaders.
Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex clinical, operational, and regulatory information clearly.
Ability to manage competing priorities and exercise sound judgment in a complex healthcare environment.
Proficiency with pharmacy information systems, automation, and other relevant technology.
Demonstrated ability to lead teams, drive accountability, manage change, and achieve measurable operational, quality, safety, financial, and regulatory outcomes.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
Board certification in pharmacotherapy, medication safety, health-system pharmacy administration, or related specialty preferred.
Lean, Six Sigma, or other process-improvement certification or experience preferred.
Essential Duties:
Provides strategic and operational leadership for all Hospital Pharmacy services, ensuring the safe, effective, timely, and cost-efficient delivery of pharmaceutical care.
Plans, organizes, directs and evaluates pharmacy operations, programs and services in alignment with the organization’s mission, strategic priorities and patient-care needs.
Ensures compliance with all applicable federal and state laws, Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy requirements, controlled-substance regulations, accreditation standards and organizational policies.
Develops, implements and regularly reviews departmental policies, procedures and standards of practice governing medication procurement, storage, preparation, compounding, dispensing, administration and disposal.
Oversees medication safety initiatives and works collaboratively with clinical leaders to identify, evaluate and reduce medication errors, adverse drug events and other medication-related risks.
Provides leadership and oversight for controlled-substance management, including inventory controls, security, recordkeeping, discrepancy review and regulatory reporting.
Oversees the acquisition, inventory management, and distribution of medications and pharmaceutical supplies, including drug-shortage management and the evaluation of cost-effective alternatives.
Develops and manages the Pharmacy operating and capital budgets, monitors departmental expenses and identifies opportunities to improve efficiency while maintaining quality and patient safety.
Recruits, develops, supervises and evaluates pharmacy leadership and staff. Ensures appropriate staffing, scheduling, orientation, competency assessment, licensure verification and continuing education.
Establishes performance expectations, provides ongoing feedback and addresses employee performance and conduct concerns in accordance with organizational policies.
Builds and sustains a culture of visibility, trust, service reliability, psychological safety, employee engagement, professional development, teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement within the Pharmacy department.
Collaborates proactively with medical staff, nursing, quality, risk management, infection prevention, finance, information technology, supply chain, and other departments to support safe, reliable, and effective medication-management practices.
Develops, monitors, and reports departmental quality, safety, productivity, financial, regulatory, and service-performance measures, including medication turnaround times, medication-safety events, controlled-substance discrepancies, regulatory findings, budget performance, staff engagement, and other key indicators. Implements corrective action and performance-improvement initiatives when necessary.
Oversees pharmacy information systems, automation and technology to support medication safety, regulatory compliance, operational effectiveness and accurate documentation.
Leads change-management efforts to standardize processes, address operational gaps, optimize technology and automation, improve workflow reliability, and sustain accountability for results.
Ensures departmental readiness for regulatory surveys, inspections and audits, and develops and oversees corrective action plans in response to identified findings.
Participates in organizational emergency-preparedness planning and ensures the continuity and availability of essential pharmacy services during emergencies or disruptions.
Maintains current knowledge of changes in pharmacy practice, healthcare regulations, medication-management standards and emerging technologies, and evaluates their potential impact on the organization.

Salary Range Details
The pay range displayed on each job posting reflects the anticipated range for new hires. A successful candidate’s actual compensation will be determined after taking factors into consideration such as the candidate’s work history, experience, skill set, and education. This is not inclusive of the value Sturdy Health’s benefits package (if applicable), which includes among other benefits, healthcare/dental/vision and retirement. For annual salaries this is based on full-time employment.
