About the Role
Happen Bank’s BSA Team, part of the Compliance Department, maintains an effective BSA/AML and Sanctions compliance program designed to protect the Bank from being used to facilitate money laundering, terrorist financing, and other illegal activity. As Director, ECO Technology & Data, you’ll lead the data, technology, and transaction monitoring strategy across the BSA/AML program, including Know Your Customer (KYC), transaction monitoring, and sanctions and watchlist screening.You’ll also help advance broader regulatory compliance data and technology capabilities, identifying opportunities to strengthen compliance through modern technology, analytics, AI, and automation while maintaining the rigor and governance required in a regulated financial institution.
What You'll Do
- Define and execute the strategy for BSA/AML data, technology, analytics, and transaction monitoring capabilities, aligning investments with regulatory requirements and program priorities
- Serve as the primary leader for BSA/AML data and technology needs across business lines, partnering across Compliance, Technology, Risk, and other teams to deliver scalable solutions
- Own the performance and ongoing evolution of BSA/AML technology, coordinating production issue resolution, system enhancements, and optimization across internal platforms and third-party vendors
- Lead technology implementations that strengthen the BSA/AML program, including large-scale solutions supporting case investigations, transaction monitoring, KYC, sanctions, and watchlist screening
- Build and manage the transaction monitoring rule development program, including rule design, optimization, analytics, and performance monitoring to effectively identify potentially suspicious activity
- Partner with Model Risk Management on model governance, validation engagements, annual reviews, and remediation of identified issues
- Own BSA/AML data requirements across risk assessments, reporting, quality assurance and controls, validation, regulatory inquiries, and issue remediation
- Use AI and automation thoughtfully to improve transaction monitoring, analytics, and compliance workflows while maintaining appropriate rigor, explainability, governance, and human oversight
- Build, lead, and develop a high-performing team, setting clear priorities and accountability while advancing the team’s technical, analytical, and compliance capabilities
About You
- 10+ years of experience in banking or financial services, with deep expertise in BSA/AML data, technology, analytics, or transaction monitoring
- Bachelor's degree or higher, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Strong command of KYC, transaction monitoring, sanctions and watchlist screening, and the data and technology capabilities that support them
- Experience with BSA/AML technology platforms such as Verafin, Bridger, Oscilar, or similar solutions, with an understanding of emerging tools and technologies
- Demonstrated experience leading quantitative analytics functions, including setting strategy for model or transaction monitoring optimization and driving adoption across teams
- Experience operating in fast-paced, dynamic environments and delivering high-quality outcomes across competing priorities, complex regulatory requirements, and evolving business needs
- You set a high standard for how your team applies rigor, judgment, and integrity to BSA/AML risk decisions
- You build strong partnerships across Technology, Risk, Compliance, and business teams and create alignment around strategy, priorities, and execution
- You have a clear perspective on where AI creates genuine leverage across BSA/AML data and technology and have translated that perspective into how your team operates. You stay engaged with evolving regulatory expectations around AI, model risk, and data governance and maintain a high standard for responsible adoption
- You lead through ambiguity, set direction for the function, develop strong talent, and hold your team accountable for measurable outcomes rather than activity
Nice to Have
- Experience with sanctions and watchlist screening technology
- Experience supporting regulatory examinations related to BSA/AML or Sanctions programs
- CAMS or similar AML certification
Work Location
San Francisco, Lehi, New York
The above locations are eligible offices for this role. The locations have been determined to foster in-person collaboration with this role’s team or the related business lines. We utilize a hybrid work model, and our teams are in-office Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. In-person attendance is essential for this role’s success, and remote placement will not be considered. Happen Bank offers relocation, based on actual job level.
Time Zone Requirements
Local hours (PT, MT, ET)
While the position will primarily work local hours, Happen Bank is headquartered in Pacific Time and our ideal candidate will be flexible working across time zones when necessary.
Travel Requirements
As needed travel to Happen Bank offices and/or other locations, as needed.
Compensation
The target base salary range for this position is 175,000-230,000. The base salary of the role will be determined by job-related knowledge, experience, education, skills, and location. Base salary is just one part of Happen Bank's Total Rewards package. You may also be eligible for long-term awards (equity) and an annual bonus (which is based on company performance, employee performance and eligible earnings).
