The Role

The Dangerous Goods Group Manager will lead a team responsible for ensuring General Motors' North American compliance with all dangerous goods regulations for transportation across all modes. This role involves developing, implementing, and overseeing robust compliance programs to mitigate risks and maintain operational efficiency.

 

What You’ll Do

• Supervise and mentor a team of dangerous goods specialists, providing guidance and support to ensure high performance and professional development.
• Develop, implement, and maintain dangerous goods transportation compliance programs, policies, and procedures in accordance with international (e.g., IATA, IMDG, NOMs, TDG, 49 CFR) and local regulations.
• Act as a subject matter expert on dangerous goods regulations, providing technical guidance and interpretation to internal stakeholders, including logistics, supply chain, engineering, and manufacturing.
• Collaborate with internal departments and external partners (e.g., carriers, freight forwarders, regulatory bodies) to ensure seamless and compliant dangerous goods transportation.
• Manage and investigate dangerous goods incidents, ensuring proper reporting to authorities and implementation of preventative measures.
• Develop and deliver comprehensive dangerous goods training programs for relevant personnel across the organization.
• Stay abreast of changes in dangerous goods regulations and industry best practices, proactively updating internal policies and procedures.
• Lead cross-functional projects related to dangerous goods compliance and optimization.
• Prepare and present reports on compliance performance, risk assessments, and incident summaries to senior management.

 

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

• Minimum of 5 years of experience in dangerous goods transportation compliance, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
• Expert-level knowledge of dangerous goods regulations (e.g., IATA DGR, IMDG Code, ADR, DOT 49 CFR, TDG Canada).
• Strong understanding of hazardous materials classification, packaging, labeling, and documentation requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and develop a team.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Certification in dangerous goods transportation (e.g., IATA, IMDG, DOT Hazmat)
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively interact with all levels of the organization and external stakeholders.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications) 

• Bachelor's degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• Experience in the automotive industry.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Project Management Experience.
• Knowledgeable of GM systems.

The selected candidate will be required to travel <25% for this role. This job is not eligible for relocation benefits. Any relocation costs would be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
