The Community Health Worker III (CHW III) supports Pima County’s Environmental Health efforts by serving as a senior level community liaison, educator, and navigator for residents impacted by water contamination, specifically trichloroethylene (TCE) exposure associated with the Tucson International Airport Area (TIAA) Superfund site.

This position will plan and implement initiatives and community based activities around environmental health contaminants. It provides advanced community based support, conducts outreach in historically affected neighborhoods, assists residents in understanding environmental exposures, and connects individuals to health, social, and environmental resources. The CHW III plays a vital role in building community trust, supporting environmental justice priorities, and ensuring residents have access to accurate information, culturally relevant education, and pathways to care and assistance.

• Provides leadership within the community health team, offering guidance and mentorship to junior community health workers;
• Supports the development and implementation of training programs for team members;
• Leads and coordinates community engagement initiatives, including workshops, health fairs, and awareness campaigns;
• Contributes to the development and implementation of community health programs and initiatives;
• Identifies areas for program improvement and innovation based on community needs and feedback;
• Works with clients facing complex health and social challenges, providing intensive case management and support;
• Advocates for systemic changes and policy improvements that positively impact community health outcomes;
• Leads quality improvement initiatives within the community health team, identifying opportunities for enhancement;
• Implements strategies to ensure the delivery of high-quality and culturally competent services;
• Stays informed about emerging public health trends, evidence-based practices, and community resources.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent AND four (4) years of experience in community work, education, or working as a community health worker (CHW) or representative (CHR) AND certified as a CHW or CHR from an accredited program. Certification must be provided at the time of application.

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):

• Minimum one (1) year experience with environmental contamination response or exposure related public health work.
• Experience with TCE contamination history, southside Tucson communities, or Superfund related public health issues.
• Experience collaborating with community-based organizations, researchers, and/or healthcare institutions.
• Experience with/knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and data management tools.

Selection Procedure:
Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Supplemental Information:

Licenses and Certificates: Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services’ review and approval of the candidate’s driving record.

Special Notice Items: The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County. Some positions may require completion of a satisfactory personal background investigation by the court or law enforcement agencies, due to the need for access to County Attorney and Court facilities, records, and communication systems.
