About the role 

This application is for a 6-month student role from January - June 2027. Resume review begins in October 2026.

The Neurology Research Unit (NRU) develops drug candidates for neurodegenerative disorders. The co-op will work within the Alzheimer’s Disease & Dementia Research Team within the NRU that focuses on the development of drugs that target β-amyloid.  

The role will primarily involve performing histological experiments and basic biochemistry experiments to support ongoing programs within the NRU. The candidate is expected to independently perform experiments and compile data to be presented to the wider team. 

What you will do as a co-op at Biogen 

• As a co-op you will assist the senior scientist in work supporting ongoing programs including: 

• High-quality sectioning of multiple brains samples 

• Perform immunohistological stainings 

• Acquire images in the microscope 

• Analyze staining parameters using ImageJ or similar 

• Perform tissue homogenizations and fractionations 

• ELISA 

• Candidate is expected to document all experiments performed, write protocols, and read 1-2 relevant papers per week, and keeping a clean work bench/area. 

• Candidate is expected to compile all work in an easily digestible format and present data to the team. 

Who you are 

• We are looking for a motivated student with extensive background in biology and exposure to working in a lab environment. 

• Familiar with mouse biopsy handling, such as brain tissue and blood. 

• Familiar with general wet lab work, such as pipetting precise volumes and reading, understanding, following and writing experimental protocols 

• Familiar with microscopy and image analysis. 

To participate in the Biogen Internship or Co-op Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria: 

• Legal authorization to work in the U.S. 

• At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date. 

• Currently enrolled in an accredited community college, college, university or skills program/apprenticeship. 

Education Requirements 

• Major in biology with lab experience and coursework in biology, biochemistry and cell biology 

• Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (preferred) 

Additional Information

The actual hourly wage offered will consider the candidate’s current academic level and degree candidacy, inclusive of Associate, Bachelor’s, Master’s, JD, MD, PhD and MBA programs. It will comply with state or local minimum wage requirements specific to the job location.
