The Ransom Center is an internationally renowned humanities research library and museum at The University of Texas at Austin. Its extensive collections provide unique insight into the creative process of writers and artists, deepening our understanding and appreciation of literature, photography, film, art, and the performing arts. Visitors engage with the Center's collections through research and study, exhibitions, publications, and a rich variety of program offerings including readings, talks, symposia, and film screenings. 

 

The Ransom Center encourages discovery, inspires creativity, and advances understanding of the humanities for a broad audience through the preservation and sharing of its extraordinary collections. 

Purpose

Reports to the Head of Public Services, participates in developing and providing user-focused library services that support teaching, research, and student success.  Manages the circulation desk of a special collections reading room, assists patrons with room and materials orientation and handling, provides basic reference support, trains across and supports circulation, reference, and reception, processes photoduplication orders, and manages the pulling of materials for classroom use.  Responsible for maintaining and revising training materials for the circulation service point. Supervises the Federal Work Study Students on the Public Services team. 

This individual stays up to date on the library and archives field best practices and has a commitment to ongoing professional development to remain current in Public Services best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Manages circulation desk operations, including explaining procedures and providing basic reference, coaching on proper use of manuscripts, books, photography, and visual materials and submitting paging and photoduplication requests. Liaises with the Public Services Coordinator to provide a quality reading and viewing room support for patron experience, including communicating any difficulties with requests to enhance reading and viewing room experience.  Trains Library Assistants and broader staff to pull and handle photography for patrons and classes. Explains and enforces security and other policies and procedures in a polite and open manner.  Opens and closes the reading and viewing room.
  • In close collaboration with the Public Services Librarian, participates in developing and providing  user-focused library services that support teaching, research, and student success. Liaises with the Instructional Coordinator to ensure materials are pulled for upcoming classes.  Trained on classroom set up and take downs. Routinely assists colleagues by filling in at additional service points.
  • Proficiently uses Aeon system to track material requests, circulation, statistics, classroom use and other activities.  Shares the responsibility for collecting, analyzing, and reporting collection use data, and for investigating and implementing new and improved public services functions.  Processes the photoduplication orders from reading room patrons.
  • Supervises Federal Work Study students including hiring, training, scheduling and processes time reports.  Assists the Public Services Coordinator and Head of Public Services in scheduling these staff members.
  • Liaises with staff in Library Services regarding stacks maintenance, locations of collections materials, and recommendations regarding offsite storage and cataloging priorities.
  • Other related functions as assigned. 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and three years' relevant experience

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member, with independent decision-making and problem solving

  • Must be flexible and willing to take on new responsibilities

  • Hours between 8-5, with opening and closing responsibilities as well as some Saturdays

  • Supervisory experience

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate coursework in Library and Information Science. 

  • Experience in archives or special collections public services. 

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-tasking environment while maintaining attention to detail.

  • Experience with an automated library circulation system like Aeon. 

  • Speaking and writing fluency in Spanish.

Salary Range

$49,900, non-negotiable

Employment Eligibility:

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
