CDL-A Railroad Equipment Operator – Taneytown, MD

Schedule: Full-time | 40 hours guaranteed | Average 60+ hours/week with overtime
Starting Pay: $26.00/hour — higher depending on experience
We are hiring a Class A CDL driver/operator for railroad field operations. This position involves transporting equipment and materials, operating heavy equipment when qualified, and assisting with railroad recovery, track work, equipment movement, and related field activities.
Responsibilities
Complete DOT-compliant pre-trip and post-trip inspections of trucks, trailers, and equipment
Drive tractor-trailers to and from work locations and inspect transported loads
Verify permits and load requirements for oversized or overweight equipment
Participate in daily job planning and safety briefings
Load, unload, move, and stage equipment and materials
Assist with railroad re-railing, load adjustment/transfer, track maintenance, repairs, and new construction
Help assemble, inspect, and operate cranes and other jobsite equipment
Assist with rigging using chains, cables, and winches
Operate equipment such as cranes, backhoes, grapple trucks, dump trucks, excavators, and other heavy equipment when qualified
Use hydraulic tools, welding and cutting torches, electrical tools, and common hand tools
Monitor vehicles and equipment for safe and reliable operation
Perform and document minor equipment and vehicle service
Assist with equipment disassembly, loading, and transportation after completing assignments
Restock vehicles and equipment with parts, supplies, and components
Sort and dispose of scrap materials in designated areas
Keep vehicles, equipment, and work areas clean, organized, and ready for use
Follow all required safety procedures and maintain quality standards
Assist other departments or work groups as needed
Requirements
Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-A)
Good driving record
Experience in construction, field labor, or another physically demanding role
Ability to complete required qualification, training, and safety programs
Must be available 24/7, including weekends and holidays, for emergency service calls
Preferred Experience
3+ years operating heavy equipment, such as:
- Backhoe
- Bulldozer
- Excavator
- Front-end loader
- Grapple truck
- Rail-bound equipment
- Tractor
- Skid-steer loader
- Equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered
Schedule & Compensation
40 hours guaranteed each week
Average 60+ hours per week, including overtime
Work outside Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–4:00 PM is paid at 1.5x overtime
24/7 on-call availability for emergency response
Per diem
Hotel accommodations/pay for travel
Layover pay when applicable
