Position Summary:
As a Capability Acquisition Engineer, you will support the acquisition, installation, commissioning, and production readiness of new manufacturing equipment required to industrialize our Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC) manufacturing capability in Indianapolis.
Working alongside and supporting an experienced Capability Acquisition Engineers, you will be involved throughout the equipment acquisition lifecycle, from defining manufacturing and equipment requirements through supplier selection, design reviews, manufacture, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), installation, Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), commissioning, qualification, and final handover into production.
This role provides an opportunity to develop practical experience in delivering complex manufacturing equipment into a world class aerospace manufacturing environment. You will work closely with Manufacturing Engineering, Operations, Facilities, Maintenance, Quality, HSE, Procurement, external equipment suppliers, and other technical specialists to ensure new equipment is delivered safely, on time, and capable of meeting the requirements of the CMC industrialization program.
You will initially work under the guidance of senior Capability Acquisition Engineers while taking increasing ownership of defined equipment packages and project activities as your experience develops.
As the Manufacturing Engineer – Capability Acquisition, you will execute manufacturing engineering activities to identify capability required, create robust SORs, functional specs, and machine validation plans as well as identify the maintenance and training to keep the machines to baseline. You will be responsible to ensure that technology acquired is capable of meeting and continuing to meet business and customer requirements for safety, quality, cost, deliver rate and lead time (SQCD).
What you will be doing:
- Support senior Capability Acquisition Engineers in the specification, procurement, installation, commissioning, and qualification of new manufacturing equipment for the CMC industrialization program.
- Support the development of equipment requirements, Statements of Requirements (SORs), technical specifications and other equipment acquisition documentation.
- Work with Manufacturing Engineering and process specialists to translate manufacturing requirements into clear equipment and facility requirements.
- Support equipment supplier identification, technical evaluations, supplier selection, and procurement activities.
- Coordinate with equipment suppliers and internal stakeholders to support successful execution of equipment acquisition projects.
- Participate in supplier design reviews to ensure proposed equipment solutions meet technical, manufacturing, safety, quality, maintainability, and operational requirements.
- Track equipment actions, technical issues, project milestones, risks, and deliverables and escalate concerns to the responsible Capability Acquisition Engineer.
- Support equipment Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), including preparation of acceptance criteria, test plans, punch lists, and closure of identified issues.
- Support planning and coordination of equipment delivery, installation, utility connections, site preparation, and commissioning activities.
- Support Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), equipment commissioning, capability demonstration, qualification, and production readiness activities.
- Work with Manufacturing Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, Quality, Facilities, EHS, IT, and other stakeholders to ensure equipment is ready for safe and effective production use.
- Support the development and implementation of equipment maintenance strategies, recommended spares, operator and maintenance training, technical documentation, and equipment handover requirements.
- Assist with resolution of technical problems encountered during equipment manufacture, installation, commissioning, and qualification using structured problem-solving techniques.
- Ensure equipment suppliers provide required documentation including drawings, manuals, certificates, software backups, recommended spares, maintenance requirements, and training materials.
- Support equipment safety activities including machinery risk assessments, guarding reviews, ergonomic assessments, and compliance with applicable Rolls-Royce and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in project reviews, supplier meetings, technical reviews, readiness reviews, and cross functional planning activities.
- Maintain accurate project and engineering documentation throughout the equipment acquisition lifecycle.
- Capture and share lessons learned to improve future capability acquisition projects and equipment standards.
- Ensure all work complies with applicable Rolls-Royce processes, technical standards, health and safety requirements, quality requirements, and regulatory requirements.
- Develop knowledge of CMC manufacturing processes, manufacturing equipment, capability acquisition processes, and Rolls-Royce engineering standards
- Willingness to travel to equipment suppliers as required to support design reviews, equipment build activities, and Factory Acceptance Testing.
- Willingness to work hands-on with manufacturing equipment and support equipment installation, commissioning, and qualification activities.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering OR;
- Master’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering OR;
- PhD in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering
- In order to be considered for this opportunity, you must be US Citizen or Permanent Resident.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Academic or practical experience with manufacturing equipment, manufacturing engineering, equipment engineering, or industrialization projects.
- Familiarity with mechanical, electrical, controls, automation, or manufacturing equipment systems.
- Experience interpreting mechanical drawings, electrical drawings, equipment layouts, or utility requirements.
- Experience with CAD or other engineering software.
- Familiarity with machinery safety, risk assessments, guarding, ergonomics, and applicable industrial safety requirements.
- Understanding of preventative maintenance, equipment reliability, recommended spares, and asset care principles.
- Experience using structured problem solving and continuous improvement techniques.
- Exposure to project management principles including schedules, actions, risks, milestones, and supplier deliverables.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated interest in developing knowledge of manufacturing equipment, capability acquisition, and advanced manufacturing technologies.
