Canada Impact+ Emerging Leader in Integrative Animal Physiology and One Health

The University of British Columbia's (UBC) Faculty of Land and Food Systems (www.landfood.ubc.ca) invites applications for a Canada Impact+ Emerging Leader to take up a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Integrative Animal Physiology and One Health, targeting the Impact+ priority area of food and water security. The proposed Emerging Leader will lead an innovative research program at the intersection between animal and environmental health.

The Impact+ Emerging Leaders program supports this position with an award (valued at $100,000 per year for six years), which will be used for a combination of salary, research, and indirect costs of research.

An ideal candidate would focus on developing sustainable aquaculture systems for Canada, with a strong interest in how the environment (including climate change) affects the animal, how production systems impact the environment, and how novel technologies can help provide solutions. Candidates will be expected to develop and teach undergraduate courses in UBC’s Applied Animal Biology Program with a special focus on animal physiology and will be expected to mentor graduate students; evidence of successful teaching and mentoring will be considered an asset.

Applicants must have completed a PhD, a UBC requirement, with a focus on applied animal physiology and preferably One Health. The candidate must take up a full-time position by July 1, 2027.

A successful candidate will develop an internationally recognized research program that seeks to understand how animals used in aquaculture systems respond to environmental challenges (including those associated with climate change). The proposed research program should aim to provide a better understanding of how these aquaculture systems can be managed to maintain sustainable food production and the integrity of supporting water resources. The proposed research may also include a One Health focus that considers animal health, environmental health, and the health of people affected by aquaculture.

Under the Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders program, nominees must have been working and residing outside Canada when the Eddie Goldenberg Research Chairs of Canada award (https://www.canada.ca/en/impact-pluschairs.html) is formally accepted. For this specific award, the acceptance date was July 1, 2026.  Applicants may apply regardless of their current location; however, candidates selected for nomination must meet this eligibility requirement on the award acceptance date in order to proceed. The role will benefit from existing university facilities and community resources and linkages, including opportunities for collaboration with colleagues working in aquaculture, applied physiology, and animal welfare. The Emerging Leader will be expected to establish a world-class independent program of research, with potential for impact through collaborations with, but not limited to, Eddie Goldenberg Research Chairs working at UBC in the strategic priority areas of food and water security, as well as environment, and climate resilience and the Arctic.

The Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders program is a $120 million federal investment designed to help institutions bring more internationally-based Early Career Researchers (ECR) to Canada. The program requires that candidates:

• be within 5 years of their first independent academic appointment (i.e., Early Career Researchers) and;

• be currently based outside Canada.

Candidates with postdoctoral or equivalent experience, a strong record of peer reviewed research in aquaculture, and a demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion will be prioritized.
