Job Summary

The Associate Vice President (AVP), Total Rewards, is a senior leadership role responsible for the strategic design, operational execution, and continuous improvement of the organization’s compensation and benefits programs. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Total Rewards, this role serves as a key partner in aligning total rewards strategies with organizational goals for a large, complex healthcare system of approximately 35,000 employees.

This role places significant emphasis on deep compensation expertise, including executive compensation, market competitiveness, and governance. The AVP oversees enterprise-wide compensation and benefits programs (excluding physician compensation), ensuring programs are competitive, compliant, data-driven, and aligned with workforce and financial objectives.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree (MBA, MHA, or related field) preferred.

Licenses/Certifications:  Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) strongly preferred; CEBS, SHRM-SCP, or SPHR preferred.

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

• Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive total rewards experience with a strong emphasis on compensation; at least five (5) years of leadership experience in large, complex healthcare

• Excellent leadership, influence and negotiation skills

• Demonstrated expertise in executive compensation is strongly preferred. Deep expertise in compensation strategy, executive compensation, and market benchmarking (strongly preferred).

• Strong knowledge of employee benefits including health and welfare and retirement programs (pension and 403(b))

• Knowledge of ERISA, IRS, DOL, and other applicable regulations.

• Advanced analytical and financial modeling skills with ability to translate data into actionable insights

• Exceptional communication and executive presence, including Board-level presentation skills.

• Ability to influence and partner with senior executives as a trusted advisor.

• Strong leadership, team development, and change management capabilities.

Principal Accountabilities

• Partner with the VP of Total Rewards to develop and execute a comprehensive total rewards strategy with a strong emphasis on compensation excellence.

• Lead design and administration of compensation programs including base pay, incentives, and executive compensation (excluding physician compensation).

• Oversee benefits strategy and administration, including health, welfare, retirement (pension and 403(b)), and wellness programs.

• Lead benefits administration, including vendor management, plan governance, compliance, and employee experience.

• Prepare Board-level materials and executive reports; present insights and recommendations to senior leadership.

• Support and contribute to Benefits and Retirement Committees with frequent interaction with Executive Leadership.

• Lead benchmarking for compensation and benefits ensuring market competitiveness and internal equity.

• Drive operational excellence, analytics, and continuous improvement initiatives.

• Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing total rewards team.

• Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.

• Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
