POSITION SUMMARY: Associate/Sr Associate Athletic Trainer - Men's Basketball

Assumes overall responsibility for the application, administration, and documentation of comprehensive healthcare services for high-risk and/or high-profile Division I teams and student-athletes as assigned by the Associate Athletic Director of Sports Medicine and Student-Athlete Welfare.  Provides counseling and health education to student-athletes and coaches.  Manages emergency response to emergency situations that occur within the athletic department.  Collaborates and works closely with all members of athletic department and in particular as division with other members of the SP4 team. Supervision of 1-3 Assistant and/or Associate Athletic Trainers.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Clinical application and administration of comprehensive health care services for the assigned high-risk and/or high-profile sports programs (70%)
• Onsite care and management of injuries and illnesses including prevention, evaluation, management, and rehabilitation.
• Assess risk of injury, perform ergonomic evaluation, self-care implementation, and overall wellness promotion.
• Electronic documentation of all patient encounters.
• Coordinate and implement injury prevention programs and customized preventative strategies and programs to each patient.
• Minimize risk of injury through awareness, education, and prevention strategies.
• Provide accommodation recommendations related to sport, academics, and activities of daily living for patients with restrictions or limitations.
• Carry out medical care for assigned patients per the University of Richmond standard operating policies and procedures.
• Communicate with Team Physicians, Coaching Staff, Strength and Conditioning Staff, and other essential personal both written and verbal reports on the health status of each student-athletes.
• Collaborate as part of the SP4 team on student-athlete data analytics and performance.
• Serves as a senior leader within Sports Medicine with responsibility for staff supervision, operational oversight, and departmental leadership initiatives. (30%)
• Recruit, hire, train, and supervise/mentor assigned Assistant and/or Associate Athletic Trainers.  Ensure
• Provide oversight of various sports medicine facilities and administrative areas, which may include emergency action planning, risk management, coordination with team physicians, and policy development/improvement.

Physical Plant – To conduct facility maintenance and repair.

Custodial Services – To collaborate on sanitation of medical facilities.

Registered Dietitians – To provide education and counseling to student-athletes.

Team Physicians and Consulting Subspecialists – To provide medical services to student-athletes. Resource Exchange Center – To provide nutritional supplements and drug education.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Supervision of 1-3 Assistant or Associate Athletic Trainers. May supervise athletic training students and work-study aides

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT: Environment – Requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Exposures encountered - Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials. Essential physical requirements: Climbing, standing, stooping, typing, running

Physical effort/lifting: Heavy Lifting – over 50 pounds. Required to work early mornings, late nights, weekends, travel, and be on-call as a regular part of the job. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Knowledge and clinical skill in the prevention, recognition, evaluation, and treatment of athletic injuries; acute care and emergency response to athletic injuries; rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries; and health care administration
• A thorough understanding of evidence-based medicine and appropriate current standards of care in Sport Medicine.
• A thorough knowledge in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, exercise physiology, nutrition, and strength and conditioning principles
• Strong verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal communication skills.
• Adherence to all applicable NCAA, conference, and institutional rules and regulations is required.
• Applied Knowledge: Athletic trainers must have knowledge of a large range of medical problems. Assessment, evaluation skills and working with other healthcare professionals will be required. Decision-Making Skills: Ability to think critically and make independent decisions regarding the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-play decisions per state licensure guidelines.
• Attention to Detail: Athletic trainers should be thorough and detailed with injury tracking and documentation.
• Interpersonal Skills: Ability to communicate effectively in high stress/pressure situation when talking to patients, medical professionals, staff and families.
• Must have the ability to organize, prioritize and perform multiple tasks with little or no supervision.

Education & experience: 

• Minimum of 5 years of collegiate or professional athletic training experience required
• BOC Certified Athletic Trainer
• Master’s degree is required
• CPR / AED Certified for Professional Rescuer
• VA Board of Medicine License to practice Athletic Training NPI Number is required
