About The Role

Nature Portfolio is the world's leader in publishing high-quality research from across the natural sciences. We are currently seeking an Associate or Senior Editor to join Communications Physics – a multidisciplinary physics open access journal.

Do you love science but feel that a career at the bench isn’t enough to sate your desire to learn more about scientific research? Do you enjoy reading papers outside your chosen area of research? If the answer is ‘yes’ to any or all these questions, you could be the person we’re looking for to join the Communications Physics (https://www.nature.com/commsphys/) editorial team.

To help us built on the success of the Communications Journals, we are seeking an associate or senior editor with expertise in the broad area of optical physics and photonics, who has a critical eye, a deep understanding of their subject and interests beyond, and who can think on their feet.​ Our new team member will champion the journal in this community and promote the journal’s coverage of all the fields within physics. Candidates with expertise in plasma and laser physics are also encouraged to apply.

The responsibilities include:

• Handling original research papers and working closely with editor teams on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review - Manuscript Assessment, Critical Scientific Evaluation, Being Resilient.
• Making well-reasoned editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts in the light of expert advice - Decision Quality.
• Contributing to content and strategy in this area at Communications Physics - Operational Excellence.
• Collaborating with external editorial board members in manuscript handling - Scientific Comprehension, Communicates Effectively.
• Commissioning, editing content such as Reviews, or writing editorials.
• Liaising extensively with editors at other journals in the Nature Portfolio and with experts in the international scientific community - Collaboration
• Attending conferences and visiting research institutions.

To be considered for the position, you will have:

• Research experience to PhD level (or equivalent) in a discipline covered by the journal.
• A passion for science and a desire to learn more. You must be able to demonstrate the breadth of your interest in scientific research, both within and beyond your speciality.
• The ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research submitted to the journal from different disciplines.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and fluency in English (written and spoken).
• An eagerness to meet scientists worldwide, online and in person, and to learn more about them and their research, and help them learn more about us and what we are looking for in the papers we seek to publish. Editors will be asked to travel to conferences and institutions several times in a year.
• A good handle of social media platforms would be desirable.
• Be comfortable with working in a fast-paced collaborative environment – team spirit is essential.
• Demonstrate an interest to writing news-type, non-specialist features for the journal or other communication outlets.
• Editorial experience if applying for the senior editor role.

This intellectually stimulating role is offered in Shanghai/Beijing/ Berlin/ Heidelberg /Pune. The position is offered on a permanent basis, and its starting date is envisaged as soon as possible.
