Position Title:

Assistant Teaching Professor in Art Education

Appointment Type:

Faculty

Job Description:

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Art and Visual Culture (AVC) in the College of Design at Iowa State University (ISU), in coordination with the School of Education in the College of Health and Human Sciences, invites applications for a part-time (50% FTE) position at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor in Art Education, with salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The appointment is anticipated to begin in January 2027 (Spring 2027 semester) and to continue through December 31, 2027, with the possibility of renewal contingent on performance, curricular need, and funding.

Art education at Iowa State prepares pre-service teachers to teach visual art across K–12 settings through art-centered, interdisciplinary, and community-engaged approaches. The successful candidate will teach two undergraduate courses each semester, in consultation with the Chair, primarily in the department’s art education (ARTED) offerings—including ARTED 2090 (Methods of Teaching in and Through Art) and ARTED 2110 (Introduction to Art Education). These courses introduce discipline-specific and interdisciplinary methods that foster creativity, collaborative learning, aesthetic sensitivity, and appreciation of art across cultures. Teaching responsibilities include preparing syllabi, course materials, and assessment tools; holding office hours; and participating in relevant program and faculty meetings. Pedagogically adaptive and innovative approaches to teaching are expected.

The School of Education offers a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in Secondary Education, which now includes an art endorsement area at the 5–12 level. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to curriculum planning for the art endorsement and to the continued growth of art education at Iowa State.

The Department of Art and Visual Culture is committed to sustaining a collegial, positive, and productive environment for each individual and the collective benefit of all. All faculty members are expected to exhibit and convey good citizenship within department, college, and university activities, interact collegially, and maintain the highest standards of integrity and ethical behavior.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship. Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in an education-related or art-related field — including art education, or art history — completed by the start date of the appointment

  • Completion of a teacher preparation program

  • Licensure or certification to teach at the K-12 level (in any state), currently or previously held

  • A minimum of three years of K-12 teaching experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in art education

  • Three or more years of experience teaching visual art at the K-12 level, any grade span; experience at the 5-12 level is of particular interest

  • K-12 visual art teaching licensure or certification

  • Experience preparing, mentoring, or supervising pre-service art teachers

  • Familiarity with current visual art education standards, such as the National Core Arts Standards and the Iowa Academic Standards for the Visual Arts, and with evidence-based art pedagogy

  • Demonstrated commitment to culturally responsive and community-engaged teaching

  • Evidence of effective teaching at the K-12 or college level, including college-level teaching beyond a graduate assistantship

  • Terminal degree (Ph.D., Ed.D., or M.F.A) in art education, art, or a related field, which would establish eligibility to teach graduate-level courses in the art endorsement area of the Secondary Education M.A.T.
