Job Description

The Department of Kinesiology in the College for Community Health at Montclair State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Athletic Training, beginning August 27, 2027. We seek a faculty member whose teaching, research, and professional engagement advance the field of Athletic Training and contribute to the preparation of future healthcare professionals. Areas of expertise may include, but are not limited to, injury prevention, clinical biomechanics, rehabilitation, therapeutic interventions, sport and human performance, emergency care, health and wellness, or other areas relevant to Athletic Training education and practice.

The successful candidate will contribute to creating an engaging and supportive learning environment for the undergraduate and graduate programs in Athletic Training and Kinesiology and play an important role in preparing students for professional practice through classroom, laboratory, and clinical education experiences. Applicants should demonstrate potential for impactful scholarship, excellence in teaching, and a commitment to student mentorship and success. The ability to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration, interprofessional education, and community-engaged scholarship is highly desirable. As part of the College for Community Health, the successful candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with faculty across health-related disciplines and contribute to initiatives that promote health, wellness, and quality of life in diverse populations.

In addition, the candidate is expected to contribute to service activities at the department, college, and university levels; maintain an active scholarly agenda; support accreditation and program assessment

activities; and engage with healthcare, athletic, educational, and community partners throughout the region. The successful candidate will join a collaborative department committed to excellence in

teaching, scholarship, and service, with access to the extensive healthcare, sport, and professional opportunities available throughout the New York metropolitan area. Faculty members are expected to contribute to the University's mission through excellence in teaching, research/scholarship, and service.

Teaching: The standard annual load for tenure-track faculty is 12 teaching credit hours (TCH) a semester, with reassigned time (course release) available for faculty with additional responsibilities such as mentoring doctoral faculty or administering programs. Faculty are expected to center student success and measurable learning outcomes through clear course design, inclusive pedagogies, and the integration of emerging disciplinary and pedagogical developments. Responsibilities include classroom instruction, student mentoring and advising, and developing and updating courses and curricula aligned with student demands and institutional strategic priorities.

Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity: Faculty are expected to be productive scholars or artists whose work embodies formal inquiry or creative expression that expands, enhances, or applies knowledge. Research results must be shared in significant national and/or international scholarly or artistic venues following rigorous review. The University supports these endeavors through the Faculty Scholarship Program (FSP), which typically provides research-active faculty with up to 6 TCH of reassigned time per academic year to pursue their scholarly agenda.

Service: Faculty members are expected to perform valuable service to the department, college/school, university, and professional communities. This includes participating in shared governance, academic program vitality, and sharing professional expertise within and beyond the University. Service activities are separate and distinct from the specific assignments for which faculty members receive course release.

The Department of Kinesiology at Montclair State University is dedicated to preparing future leaders in athletic training, physical education, exercise science, sport administration, coaching, and related professions through innovative undergraduate and graduate education. The department advances the University’s mission by educating highly skilled professionals, fostering scholarship and community engagement, and developing partnerships that address workforce needs across healthcare, educational, sport, and corporate settings. Through nationally recognized and accredited programs, including a CAATE-accredited Athletic Training program, hands-on clinical and experiential learning opportunities, and a commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service, the department prepares graduates to improve health, safety, physical activity,

athletic performance, and quality of life in diverse communities. Faculty are committed to student success, interdisciplinary collaboration, and advancing evidence-based practice across the health, sport, and performance professions.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED:

  • Earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree (or ABD with degree completed by date of appointment) in Athletic Training, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Rehabilitation Sciences, Health Sciences, or a closely related field.

  • Board of Certification (BOC) credential in good standing as a Certified Athletic Trainer.

  • Eligibility for licensure as an Athletic Trainer in the State of New Jersey.

  • Record of achievement and potential for future success in research, scholarship or creative activity.

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching all students.

  • A record that demonstrates interest and commitment to service.

PREFERRED:

  • Significant record of scholarly/creative work.

  • Previous teaching experience in an Athletic Training program or related health professions with special interest in CAATE-accredited experience, clinical education, preceptor development, and student supervision.

  • Experience integrating simulation, technology, or innovative instructional methods into teaching.

  • Expertise in one or more areas such as:

    • Injury prevention

    • Rehabilitation and therapeutic interventions

    • Clinical biomechanics

    • Emergency care (including BLS CPR/AED instructor certification)

    • Sport performance

    • Manual therapy

    • Health promotion and wellness

    • Healthcare administration

    • Athletic Training pedagogy

  • Evidence of interdisciplinary or interprofessional collaboration.

  • Demonstrated ability or potential to develop partnerships with healthcare systems, secondary schools, collegiate athletics programs, or other clinical sites.

  • Demonstrated ability to foster an inclusive learning environment that supports student success.

  • Interest in securing external funding and contributing to community-engaged scholarship, service, or collaborative research initiatives.

  • Previous experience with program assessment, accreditation, or curriculum development.
