PURPOSE

The Assistant Director position for the Center for Math Learning and Innovative Teaching (CMLIT) is crucial to addressing high DFW rates in gateway math courses, which impede degree progression. Through leadership in faculty development, innovative teaching, comprehensive tutoring—including AI-powered support—and rigorous program assessment, the Assistant Director will coordinate initiatives that align with university priorities of student success, and STEM workforce development. The role integrates collaboration across academic units, K–12 partners, and campus resources to ensure consistent instructional quality and data-driven improvements. Dedicated leadership is needed to establish CMLIT and advance measurable gains in student achievement and institutional excellence in mathematics education.

 

DESCRIPTION

Functional Area 1: Strategic Leadership & Management

Percent Effort: 20%

  • Develop and implement the Center’s vision, mission, and annual goals.

  • Oversee daily operations of the Center, ensuring alignment with college and university objectives.

  • Supervise and support Center staff, tutors, and associated faculty

 

Functional Area 2: Faculty Development Coordination

Percent Effort:20%

  • Design, organize, and facilitate the annual fall “bootcamp” for instructors teaching gateway math courses.

  • Coordinate ongoing faculty development workshops and activities to promote evidence-based teaching.

  • Foster faculty learning communities within the Center.

Functional Area 3: Oversight & Coordination of Entry-Level Math Courses

Percent Effort:20%

  • Coordinate the delivery of entry-level mathematics courses to promote consistency in learning outcomes, instructional quality, and student success.

  • Collaborate with faculty to develop and maintain common course materials, assessments, grading practices, and instructional resources.

  • Monitor course performance and coordinate implementation of student success initiatives, including tutoring and AI-supported learning tools.

Functional Area 4: K–12 Partnerships & College Readiness

Percent Effort:20%

  • Collaborate with local high schools to better understand students' mathematical preparation, identify areas of strength and gaps in readiness for college-level mathematics, and foster relationships that support student success.

  • Work with college and K–12 partners to develop and support initiatives, including summer bridge and transition programs, that strengthen students' preparation for entry-level mathematics courses.

Functional Area 5: Teaching & Instructional Leadership

Percent Effort:20%

  • Teach entry-level mathematics courses as assigned, modeling evidence-based and innovative instructional practices.

  • Mentor new instructors by sharing effective teaching strategies and instructional resources.

  • Develop and pilot instructional approaches and technologies that improve student learning and success.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a closely related field.

  • Six (6) of experience in math education, academic support, or faculty development.

  • Additional education may be considered as a substitute for the minimum experience requirement:

    • Master’s degree in related field and four (4) of experience in math education, academic support, or faculty development. OR

    • Doctoral degree in related field and two (2) of experience in math education, academic support, or faculty development.

  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills in academic or student support settings.

  • Experience in curriculum development, tutoring services, and/or faculty training.

  • Familiarity with innovative teaching pedagogy, educational technology, and program assessment.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Commitment to student success, and continuous improvement

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s or Doctorate in Mathematics or Mathematics Education.

  • Experience in higher education or high school administration.

  • Knowledge of gateway math course challenges and best practices.

  • Track record of collaboration across departments or schools.

SALARY: Up to $5,416.67 Monthly (Up to $65,000 Annually, Approximately)

  • Commensurate with experience and qualifications

NOTE: Employment may be impacted by the Presidential proclamation issued on September 19, 2025 and the moratorium issued by Texas Governor Abbott on January 27, 2026.
