Job Description

Area Manager Maintenance – Stamping provides technical and operational leadership across Lansing’s stamping organization. This role is accountable for safe, reliable, and competitive technical operations across multiple stamping areas, including maintenance execution, equipment reliability, skilled-trades capability, problem solving, and continuous improvement.

The successful candidate will lead through a strong technical presence on the plant floor, establish clear priorities, and partner with Stamping Operations, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Safety, Facilities, Labor Relations, and other plant functions to deliver business results. This leader will develop people, strengthen standardized work, remove technical roadblocks, and ensure the organization is prepared to support current production, future programs, and changing manufacturing technologies.

What you will do

• Lead the Tool & Die and Maintenance teams across multiple Lansing stamping plants at Lansing Grand River Stamping and Lansing Regional Stamping, aligning priorities to safety, quality, responsiveness, cost, delivery, and people objectives.
• Oversee the Tool & Die & Maintenance functions and its partnership with Operations, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, and Production Control. Ensure die, tooling, and related equipment are available, capable, maintained, repaired, and released to support production requirements.
• Establish clear ownership and escalation paths between the two plants so technical risks, equipment conditions, staffing needs, and recovery actions are visible and addressed consistently.
• Review tooling condition, repair priorities, spare components, die-life risks, preventive maintenance requirements, and tooling capital needs; balance resources across stamping areas and facilities.
• Lead Tool & Die and Maintenance technical problem solving with a focus on root cause, robust repair, repeat-failure elimination, standardized repair practices, and lessons learned.
• Establish and sustain a proactive equipment-reliability strategy, including preventive and predictive maintenance, failure-mode elimination, critical-spares planning, and recurring-defect reduction.
• Ensure safe execution of work through disciplined application of Workplace Safety Systems, energy-control requirements, risk assessment, standardized work, and applicable GM procedures.
• Support press, automation, controls, material-handling, tooling, die, and plant-floor systems as applicable to the assigned stamping areas.
• Coordinate & approve technical response during equipment failures, die damage, tooling issues, launches, major repairs, rebuilds, installations, and other events that could affect production or employee safety.
• Ensure Tool & Die and Maintenance teams participate in launch, process-change, and equipment-modification reviews early enough to identify maintainability, accessibility, reliability, and spare-parts risks.
• Build technical depth through structured qualifications, coaching, mentoring, knowledge transfer, and succession planning for skilled trades and technical leaders.
• Provide clear, fact-based communication to plant leadership and cross-functional stakeholders, including status, risks, decisions required, and recovery plans.
• Support capital projects, equipment modifications, technology deployment, and program or process changes from requirements definition through installation, validation, and handoff to operations.
• Champion Global Manufacturing System principles and a culture of ownership, inclusion, continuous learning, and accountability.

Required capabilities

• 5+ years demonstrated experience leading technical, maintenance, manufacturing, engineering, or skilled-trades operations in a complex industrial or automotive environment.
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent Work Experience
• Strong knowledge of stamping manufacturing equipment, maintenance practices, automation, controls, tooling/dies, or related plant-floor systems.
• Proven ability to diagnose complex technical problems and lead cross-functional teams to durable solutions.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities with a high degree of autonomy, accountability, and sound judgment.
• Strong understanding of safety systems, energy control, risk assessment, and safe work execution in a manufacturing environment.
• Ability to translate technical issues into clear business impacts, options, recommendations, and action plans.
• Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
• Ability to build effective relationships with skilled trades, operations leaders, engineers, suppliers, contractors, and senior plant leadership.
• Demonstrated commitment to developing people, improving standardized work, and sustaining gains.
• Proficiency with common business, maintenance, manufacturing, and data-analysis tools.

Preferred experience

• 7+ years experience supporting automotive stamping operations, large presses, transfer presses, automation, robotics, controls, or high-volume manufacturing.
• Master’s degree in engineering or business Administration
• Experience leading Tool & Die operations, die repair and maintenance, die tryout, tooling modifications, die moves, tooling readiness, or die-related quality and downtime recovery.
• Experience leading maintenance-reliability improvement, major equipment repairs, rebuilds, installations, or manufacturing launches.
• Experience managing technical priorities across more than one plant, assembly, stamping area, or other operating unit.
• Experience working with Global Manufacturing System principles, structured problem solving, continuous improvement, or similar operating systems.
