Overview

The New Style of IT (Deployed) (NSoIT(D)) programme is a UK Ministry of Defence initiative delivering a new C4 capability, known as OpNET, across the SECRET, Mission SECRET and OFFICIAL-SENSITIVE security domains.

The Applications Engineer will deliver hands-on engineering support to the OpNET programme, designing, building, and supporting enterprise application services and platforms.

The role focuses on application deployment, configuration, and lifecycle management across enterprise environments, supporting full lifecycle delivery from design and integration through to testing, deployment, and operational support within secure or regulated environments.

Main Responsibilities

• Deploy, configure, and support enterprise applications across Windows and/or Linux environments.
• Manage application lifecycle activities including installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, and decommissioning.
• Support integration of applications with enterprise services including identity (e.g. AD/LDAP), databases, and networking.
• Configure and maintain application environments across development, test, and production platforms.
• Support troubleshooting and resolution of application and system integration issues.
• Implement secure-by-design principles for application deployment and configuration.
• Produce and maintain technical artefacts including design documentation, build guides, and runbooks.
• Support system integration, testing, and validation of application services.
• Work with Service Management functions to investigate and resolve incidents and service requests.
• Contribute to automation and standardisation of application deployment processes.
• Support operational handover and provide ongoing support to ensure application stability and performance.

Essential Skills, Qualifications, and Experience

• Strong experience in application installation, configuration, and support within enterprise environments.
• Experience working with Windows and/or Linux server environments.
• Knowledge of integrating applications with enterprise services (e.g. Active Directory, databases, web services).
• Experience supporting application environments across development, test, and production.
• Understanding of application security and hardening best practices.
• Experience troubleshooting complex application and integration issues.
• Ability to produce technical documentation (LLDs, build guides, runbooks).
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
• Experience working within complex programmes and large technical teams.
• Understanding of service management principles (ITIL).

Desirable Skills, Qualifications, and Experience

• Experience with middleware and application servers (e.g. IIS, Apache, Tomcat).
• Knowledge of scripting or automation (e.g. PowerShell, Bash).
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
• Experience working within Defence or secure public sector environments.
• Exposure to containerised applications (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes).
• Experience with Agile delivery and Atlassian toolsets (JIRA, Confluence).
• Relevant certifications or vendor-specific training.

Additional Information

• Base working site: MoD Corsham.
• 4 days on site per week.
• There will be a requirement to provide support for Live Ops.
• SC Clearance required.
