The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal cases at their request. Additionally, the Department of Justice includes the North Carolina State Crime Lab, the North Carolina Justice Academy, and the Sheriffs’ and Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Divisions.

Recruitment Range: $39,244 - $42,436

This position is responsible for:
• evaluating applications for justice officer certification. This also requires evaluations of in-service and basic training compliance.
• independently perform a variety of administrative tasks, applying varied guidelines and program knowledge which requires interpretation to resolve problems.
• review and interpret specialized forms and documents in accordance with applicable rules and regulations.
• independently chooses the appropriate course of action to produce a variety of records and reports where subject matter and complexity may vary.
• provide technical assistance and support to agency representatives throughout the certification process.

The selected candidate is subject to a background investigation.

**This position is designated as a mandatory employee, which means under the State’s Communicable Disease Emergency Policy, that the position would be required to report in person to work in an emergency in the event DOJ officially closes or if DOJ management determines that only mandatory positions/employees are required to report to work. Mandatory positions/employees must report to the office, and management discretion will be used to determine during which days or hours this position must appear in the office.**

The Sheriffs' Standards Division oversees the commission-mandated detention officer and telecommunicator certification courses. This includes the regulation of community colleges, the North Carolina Justice Academy, and local agencies' delivery of commission-mandated course offerings. Instructors facilitating commission-mandated courses are also subject to regulation and certification by the Division. The Division also administers a professional certificate and service award program to recognize justice officers for their experience, training, and service in law enforcement and detention.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

• Ability to learn and independently apply laws, program rules and regulations.

• Ability to learn programs and services and apply this knowledge in problem-solving in responding to most questions and inquiries.

• Ability to work independently, work with people with courtesy and tact in performing public contact and communication duties that may be sensitive or confidential in nature.

• Management seeks an individual who is highly organized with an eye for detail. 

• Candidate must be able to work in close proximity to co-workers (cubicle environment).

Minimum Education and Experience

High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of related administrative experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
