The Denver 9-1-1 Communications Center is the primary public safety answering point for the City and County of Denver, operating under the Denver Department of Public Safety. It serves as the vital link between the public and emergency services, including law enforcement, fire, and medical response.
The center also houses the NCIC Division, which supports law enforcement by identifying suspects, processing records, and managing critical law enforcement data.
Denver 9-1-1 operates 24/7, requiring staff to work a variety of shifts (day, swing, or graveyard), including weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime with short notice. Work hours may range from 8 to 12 hours per shift.
Our Positions
Emergency Communication Technician
Receives and processes 9-1-1 emergency and non-emergency calls from the public.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
- Experience Requirement: Two (2) years of public contact experience dealing with individual problems and applying policies, procedures, and or legal guidelines and one year of computer user experience in a Microsoft Windows computer operating system environment or comparable operating system.
- Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
- License/Certifications: Requires a CPR Certification before the end of academy training and successfully recertification as required by the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch during the employment.
- Requires an EMD Certification issued by NAED before the end of academy training and successfully recertification as required by the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch.
- Must pass an initial pre-security clearance screening and maintain CBI (Colorado Bureau of Investigation) certification as a condition of employment. Must take and pass some online test every two years to maintain certification.
- Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
Non-Emergency Communication Technician
Receives and processes 9-1-1 non-emergency calls from the public and directs the calls to the appropriate resources
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
- Experience Requirement: None
- Education/Experience Equivalency: None
- License/Certifications: By position, requires a valid driver's license at the time of application.
- By position, requires a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL "A") or (CDL “B”) at time of application.
- By position, requires a current CPR certification at time of application.
- Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
Police Dispatcher
Researches and relays information to first responders, including direct communication with police officers and detectives. A Police Dispatcher supports the Denver Police Department during planned and unplanned events.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
- Experience Requirement: One (1) year of experience as a 911 Operator or Emergency Dispatcher.-OR-Two (2) years of experience in public contact over the phone/in-person.-OR-One (1) year of high volume call-center/general-dispatching experience.-OR-One (1) year of experience as a paramedic on an emergency ambulance (not an air ambulance) or as a fire fighter, police officer, or military police officer.
- Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
- License/Certifications: Requires a CPR Certification before the end of academy training and successfully recertification as required by the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch during the employment.

NCIC Analyst
Processes, screens, and enters various law enforcement reports and information into federal, state, and local computer systems to ensure that the correct person is being brought to justice and arrest records are accurate.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
- Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of clerical experience.
- Education/Experience Equivalency: A combination of appropriate education and experience may be substituted for the education and experience requirements.
- License/Certifications: Must be able to pass an initial pre-security clearance screening and maintain CBI (Colorado Bureau of Investigation) certification as a condition of employment.
- Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
Redeployment during Citywide Emergencies
City and County of Denver employees may be re-deployed to work in other capacities in their own agencies or in other city agencies to support core functions of the city during a citywide emergency declared by the Mayor.
