The Northrop Grumman Space System Dulles Flatsat Hardware Simulations Team is looking to fill a starting engineering position working on assorted commercial and non-commercial space programs. Studies in electrical engineering is expected. This position requires strong mechanical knowledge and abilities. As part of the Flatsat team, the candidate will develop hardware to implement closed loop simulation for avionics flight computers on Space Vehicle (SV) Flatsat Systems. The candidate will learn how to define requirements based on the program’s needs, select hardware to simulate SV component data and control interfaces, define testbed harness connections to avionics units and interfaces for simulating SV components, and test and integrate the completed simulation testbed with the avionics units. The candidate will also learn how to design and fabricate a Hardware in the Loop (HITL) rack and a testbed which make up the Flatsat simulation system. The HITL racks are used to check out, integrate, and operate the Flatsat testbed with integrated avionics. These systems provide power, control, and telemetry. The candidate will be part of a small Flatsat Design Team consisting of both software and hardware engineers supporting a number of programs.

Responsibilities will include rack, panel, and cable design, electrical interconnects and schematics, developing certification procedures, and hardware checkout/troubleshooting. Root cause determination, problem resolution and documentation is expected. In this role, the candidate will interface with subsystem design engineers, flight software engineers, systems engineers, simulation software engineers, parts procurement, and assembly technicians, in order to provide support for various Flatsat tasks as required. Position focuses on the full design cycle of hardware-in-the-loop systems, from conception through design to fabrication and integration and test.

Prior experience working on small teams and the ability to learn and excel as part of a simulation hardware development team is beneficial. Learning how to debug simulation hardware and software for avionics integration and test environments using common lab equipment is expected. Excellent writing, reading and speaking skills are necessary as the candidate will be involved in the entire Flatsat system development, test and operations lifecycle and will need to be able to communicate ideas and information effectively.

 

Basic Qualifications for an Electrical Engineer 1.

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering

·       Proficient in understanding schematics and wiring diagrams

• Familiar with at least one high-speed serial interface protocol (TCP/IP, SPACEWIRE, LVDS, RS422/485, 1553)

·       Familiar with electrical and/or mechanical design tools (e.g., Zuken, Visio, CREO)

• Can operate electronic lab equipment (such as DMMs and O-Scopes) for debug and troubleshooting
• Self-motivated and the ability to be an independent worker once guidance is provided
• Ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI government clearance

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Ability to work in small teams with senior engineering oversight
• Strong written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, including the ability to explain complex ideas in a clear and concise manner 
• Capable of utilizing the Microsoft Office Suite or programs

Primary Level Salary Range: $76,200.00 - $114,400.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
